Transmission smokes and smells

I recently swapped out my transmission for another rebuilt 5-speed for my 97 firebird.well when i drive it it gets really hot around where the transmission is and in higher gears it starts smokin and it smells like tree sap or somthin.has anyone else had this problem and how do i fix it?

get under there and see if it's leaking from anywhere. just could be odd timing that maybe your rear main seal went.

Check the trans fluid level. If the tranny is getting hot, then there is either insufficient fluid or internal damage (or both). Also when a trans gets too hot it will blow fluid out of the overflow tube on top of it. Find the fill plug on the side of the trans and remove it. When cold, the fluid level should be just below the fill plug hole (about 1/8 inch below) but the general rule of thumb is to fill it until it starts coming out of the fill hole. The easiest way to add fluid is with some sort of transfer pump. If nothing else, a funnel with a long hose on the end will allow you to fill it from above. You can also fill it by removing the shifter if you want.
