if you have a higher mileage engine, especially one that has any kind of leak, you will be screwed
putting the synthetic in will definitely show you where your leaks are

i recently changed the valve cover and LIM gaskets.
It does not leak oil right now.

If you don't have any leaks on your engine righ now then I think you would be fine changing over. I did using RP 10w/30 and it runs great. I even went to RP in the rear end. I also went with Valvoline dexron VI syn. in the tranny. Runs great.08' L76 6.0L 4X4 Chevy EXT.Cab LTZ Vortec MAX with Snug top cover, Dynomax exhaust,Hptuners& K&N intake

Re: is it a bad idea
One benefit is better oil for the internals also you can go more without changing oil, but I do change mine at 4,000 now instead of 3,000. Just for the peace of mind, still worries me not changing it at 3,000 since I'm so use to it. I just started last year using RP.08' L76 6.0L 4X4 Chevy EXT.Cab LTZ Vortec MAX with Snug top cover, Dynomax exhaust,Hptuners& K&N intake

Re: is it a bad idea
My car was converted to synthetic oil (Mobil1) at over 100k miles and it still runs great. The Mobil1 oil says that it's good for 15k miles, but I still usually change it every 3-5k. After 5k miles, the oil level was still where it should have been.
