  • FPR or Pump

    98 Camaro
Alright, so this was the first time I was bringing my car to the track and like an hour drive to get there. On the way there my FP gauge drops to zero then almost goes all the way back up to 40ish to where it normally is. It almost looks like someones flippin a switch on it. Then eventually it will drop to 0. I had to pull over twice and just wait for a little bit as if it were cooling off then it ran fine for awhile.
This is the 3rd week I've been driving this car with a new walbro 255lph pump that I installed.
My car is turbo charged with a vacuum line still connected to the FPR.
I had no troubles while at the track but I did run a really bad time considering i'm turbo'd which I blame on the drivetrain and the fact that it's not completely tuned yet.
Also I had no troubles on the drive to my gf's house, not once. Then the drive home today it happened again after driving for eh 20 minutes.
Anyways, before I buy a new pump and blame it on that does anyone have any clue as to what it really is? maybe the fpr?
I'm not nearly out of gas. Full tank when it happened. I'm pretty damn sure all the electrical connections are intact. It's soooo incredibly inconsistent which is what makes it frustrating.

Thanks yeah.. but obviously i'm looking for something a little more specific.. maybe from someone who has had similar problems because I don't want to just dish out the money for another pump when it could be the FPR ya know?

Oh and btw, a new fuel filter was installed along with the pump too.

sometimes those turbos can create vacuum; so you said you had a full tank of fuel? how much did you burn at the track?

Huh? How can a turbo create vacuum? I have half a tank left too. Do you know what you're talking about or are you just guessing?

Hmm someone on a different forum told me about racetronixs hot wire kits. Apparently an upgraded wiring kit for the pumps.. I don't know crap about em. Anyone?

drive it for a while then hit wot.

to be honest....it doesn't hurt to change out your fpr. cheap, plus with modded cars, you want to make sure all fuel parts are perfect.

                  Re: FPR or Pump

The problem when you add a high volume pump to a F body is the factory wiring is too small. The contacts in the fuel pump relay burn up causing poor connection. The racetronics hot wire kit has a larger gauge wire and is connected directly to the alternator where it receives higher voltage for the pump.It also places the relay back by the fuel pump. The original relay is still used but does not supply voltage to the pump. You could just replace your original relay but you would probally experience the same problem later on.

                    Re: FPR or Pump

I've installed the racetronix wire kit (and pump) on two Fbodies (and made my own for another). The kit is VERY well designed and definately worth the price.

In reference to your pump problems, I've had a similar situation with a big fuel pump (A1000) on a custom fuel system overheating and shutting off. After 3 new pumps and literally redoing and upgrading the whole system, we finally discovered that the NEW fuel filter had gotten clogged up right off the bat and was causing the pump to work overtime and overheat. We never even suspected the fuel filter because it was "new". So my point is, take a look at your fuel filter. It would suck to have to spend a bunch of money because of a stopped up fuel filter. We spent over $2500 before we decided to replace the NEW fuel filter. Expensive lesson, but I'll never let a clogged fuel filter fool me again.

Heh, I did drive it for awhile.. to norwalk from perrysburg so like an hour averaging 50mph, and an hour or two after that I did a WOT run all the way down the track :) No problems.

Yeah it wouldn't be a bad idea to up the gauge, so is there a website or is this something I find through jegs? Also is the wire kit model specific?

This sucks, I have all this new power with the fear of dying on the side of the road. After last weekend though I'm taking a break from that car.. no AC in this weather is unbearable.

Everything they list for Fbodies is for V8 cars, but the difference is in the connectors at the fuel pump. I don't remember how the V6 fuel pump connectors compare to the LT1 or LS1 connectors but if any of those pictured look right, then maybe it will work for you?

I installed the hot wire on my car with no problems and mine is a V6.
You actually have to take the pins out of the connector and insert them into the new connector supplied in the kit.

Crap theres like 3 different kits that could possibly be the one I'm looking for, I have no idea though which one would have similar connectors.

Does anyone know which kit should be used on a 98?
