  • Help-cant figure this out

I'v had a ticking noise coming from my car for a while now,I thought at first it was a lifter but now after a better listen it sounds like it coming from under the car between the engine transmission,i think. The noise speeds up with the engine, but it stops once the car starts to move when in gear, its also a bit louder when put in park, and gets louder when hot,any suggestions would be great, thanks.

A ticking noise coming from that area would most likely be a cracked flexplate. The easiest way to tell is to unbolt the torque converter and push it back a little (it won't move very far) then start the car again. If the ticking goes away, then you have a cracked flexplate.

also see if the starter pinion gear is hitting the flexplate when rotated you should be able to see if the flexplate is broken just by startingthemotor and watching the flexplate it the ring gear should run in a straight line and not move front to back at all if its moving its broken or need of replacement .

Slight cracks near the center bolts will cause a rather loud ticking / snapping noise and movement may not be noticeable at the outer teeth, especially with the torque converter bolted up. The best way to tell if a flywheel is cracked is to unbolt the torque converter and see if the noise goes away.

after another listen,it seems to becoming from rigth underneath the starter, you can hear it from the top but its louder from the bottom,is this where the flexplate is located, thanks for help.
Also would a cracked flexplate make such a high rate of tick, tick, tick, noise?

The flexplate is bolted to the rear of the crankshaft on the back of the motor. To remove it you would have to remove the transmission. You can access the 3 bolts to unbolt it from the torque converter though by removing the starter and turning the engine over until you see the bolts through the starter hole. Or if there is an inspection cover on that tranny (I don't remember if there is or not) then you can take it off and access the torque converter bolts that way.

And yes, a cracked flexplate can make a pretty fast tick, although I can't really tell you if it sounds like it or not since of course I can't hear it myself.
