I agree with Dobie. HO alternator, if that doesn't work, overdrive pulley.
On an aside, my coolant heats up too at lights. That's normal. The 160 thermo will only delay it a little longer. Coolant flush shouldn't hurt things though. Maybe.
yeah but this thing heats up wayyyy to quickly. i'll take all the time i can get and if a 160 will help keep it down then so be it.
Yes, it should be an overdrive pulley (which is smaller in diameter than the stock one). I noticed on another thread that you have an underdrive pulley setup. An underdrive pulley setup frees up horsepower by making all of your accessories run slower. In otherwards, your alternator is turning slower at idle than it should which reduces its output. If you do nothing else until you get the HO alternator, put the stock crankshaft pulley back on.
i don't have my stock one, through it away over a year ago. I wouldn't want to put it back on anyways.
first. upgrading to 1 gauge wire is not going to do jack for your voltage problems. the wire is not the problem.
second. Your car overheats because it is a firebird. THEY DON'T HAVE GRILLS...the only thing to cool the radiator are the fans, you have a 180 degree thermo in a car preprogrammed for a 195...try putting a 195 back in it, I am willing to bet you that it will fix your overheating problem.
have you flushed the coolant recently? do you actually add conc. coolant or do you add just water when it's low?
third. your electrical problems. for the sake of your health stop trying to fix them. you're going to wind up frying your head next time instead of the alt lol
try getting rid of the underdrive pulley or get and overdrive pulley for the alt. the high output alternator is unnecessary...
fourth. you have an underdrive pulley. do you know what it does? because if you did, you'd understand how that effects the performance of your other belt driven accesories.
COUGH WATER F*CKING PUMP COUGH
hmm the cars overheating. you'd want to flow MORE coolant in that situation, not less. think about that.
as for the belt that you are positive about being tensioned properly....how old is it? are you aware that when placing an engine under high load you can stretch the belt just enough to start slipping without actually being able to identify the problem individually (meaning it causes another problem that you can identify)
i'm sorry for sounding like an ******* but this thread is neverending, everyone of your problems is related and I hope i just pointed the keystone out to you.

 Sounds logical enough to me. Now get crackin on what you think my problem is! lol I'm about to replace a new fuel filter for fun!

you are wrong on a number of counts here buddy.
first of all, please explain to me how putting a higher temp. thermostat in my car is going to fix my problems.
if you read my posts you'd realize i'm having the coolant system flushed on THURSDAY. and no, i never add water to my coolant, thats retarded. i add 50/50 mix whenever its low and it usually never is anyhow.
as for the crankshaft pulley, your probably right but unless u know where i can get a stock crankshaft pulley, the underdrive one stays on.
oh yeah, the serpentine belt that you "assume" is ancient is about 2 months old  it's also the CORRECT size for my pulley system with the underdrive crank being accounted for.
yeah, u pretty much do sound like an *******, stop assuming im a noob.
Hmmm.. yeahhhhhhhh.. I'm just gonna leave this one now. For now.
But TKO, i definitely think the pulley should be changed. You got the aftermarket one.. So where's the original you took off? BTW GMpartsdirect.com
andy's bein a **** right now, but honestly he's probably right, i actually think i remember the voltage problem happening after having the new underdrive pully installed, perhaps thats the problem with my cooling (water pump) and voltage (alternator)
hmmmm....
i'd still like to hear how adding a hotter thermostat helps my problem at all.

well, lets see, from experience, I had a 180 thermo in my car while it was still programmed for a 195, and it overheated constantly. Popped the old 195 back in and bam, what do you know? it didn't overheat. Your entire cooling system has to work collectively with each other.
and I did read your post, as i read it, i wondered how you could take apart a 3.4 top end and rebuild it, but you don't flush your own coolant?
as for the crankshaft pulley, I know exactly where you can get one. Few places actually. Try salvage yards, put up a post in the wanted section on here, try advance, autozone, etc. or at last resort...GENERAL MOTORS
as for the belt, i never assumed its age, i ASKED. and to inform you of some more info you probably didn't know before... you can stretch a belt in 20 seconds. I put a new belt on my car, took it balls to the wall down the highway, and guess what. when I got home, It was slipping! Some things happen and they're just freak problems.
you can leave the underdrive pulley on your car, it's your car, but as long as it's there, you're making it alot harder to fix the problems that we see a thread about every other day. and you don't gain much from it anyway.
As for being an ******* and assuming you're a noob....
well....
i'll put it this way.
I have never seen someone on this site ask so many questions about installs.
and I have never, ever, met someone that wanted to run a dry shot of nitrous into a 3.4 without finding someway to increase the fuel into the motor.
screw this thread. you try to point something out and help somebody and they just give you lip in return.

let me try to be calm and reasonable here.
1. i really don't see how putting a higher temp thermostat in your car is going to help you stay cooler. physcially it just doesn't make sense. my car is not "programmed" for that, the thermostat is a stand alone piece of equipment that opens up by itself when the temp reaches that set point.
i don't care that you had a weird experience, it just doesn't make sense.
2. don't bash me for not flushing my own coolant, i flushed the radiator which seemed enought at the time when i did my tear apart.
3. i could probably get the stock crankshaft pulley pretty cheap and YES, that actually makes perfect sense why it should be stock. (funny how in all the threads i've ever read about underdrive pullies, the only one people warn about are the alternator ones.) i was in fact oblivious to the effect the crank pully had on the other accessories. basically i thought it made the crank spin faster (it is a smaller pulley) meaning it would not affect the other things. i will look into getting a stock one put back on. thank you for that advice, and like i said it would appear to me that when i started having voltage issues it was soon after replacing the stock one.
4. the belt... if i do put the stock pully back on, why not just wait til i do that and then get the correct size belt that is meant for this car? sounds good to me.
5. i ask alot of questions, but i had no idea there was some kind of "unnoficial" limit on how many u could ask on this site. (my turn to be a ****) if your sick of all my questions .... don't involve yourself with my threads!!! there are plenty of other knowledgable people who will help.
6.as for the nitrous, where are u coming up with that???
i bought (and still have) a walbro fuel pump!!!! and i was looking into an AFPR, but was told it was unnecessary, so wherever you got your idea from about me not wanting to upgrade the fuel system, it was obviously wrong.

im not sick of your questions. I'm sick of answering them and having you come back with belligerence.
the whole cooling system operates together, even though the thermostat is a stand alone piece of equipment. ever wonder why PCMforLess or TexasSpeed ask what thermostat is in your car on the order sheet?
i just thought you might find it as food for thought since it worked for me.
as for the pulley, just read the pm and you'll see what I mean. not everyone's engines operate or respond EXACTLY the same way....
replace the belt when you do the pulley....
as for the nitrous....a walbro pump, afpr, all that does nothing if your injectors can't keep up, plus you have no maf....making a dry shot a PITA. Run it wet, don't blow the engine. If you ever decide to go with nitrous. I didn't say you weren't upgrading, you just weren't upgrading it the way it really needed to be done..lol
I know I was going to.....and then just bought a 5.0 instead...but thats another topic altogether.
I really want to help you Max, and you're right, they're are plenty of knowledgeable people on this site. Much more knowledgeable than me. Hell, I often think of myself as the village idiot around here.
best of luck with this, if i can help any further let me know.

Andy, i do appreciate the help and i kick myself for all the stupid questions i ask and stupid **** i do to my car, why even today i was changing my spark plugs and i dropped one down into god only knows where in my engine bay and it took me 45 minutes to fish it out. I"m a hack mechanic and my days are numbered.
since i already bought the 160 thermostat, let me install it and then see just what happens. even if it doesn't fix the problem if i can get the voltage problem fixed (via h.o. alternator or putting the stock crank pulley back on again) then i won't have a problem running the rad. fan with my volts dropping. these problems are going hand in hand right now, fix one you fix the other, that kind of deal.
let me take care of what i have planned (coolant flush, 160 thermo, new hoses, h.o. alternator) and then i'll get that stock pulley and a new belt and then maybe i won't have any problems with this car and won't have to ask so many stupid questions.

bah don't be so hard on yourself, it's not that they're stupid.. but more like redundant. Is it a lack of mechanical confidence? Heh get your hands dirty and jump in! I don't mean this as an insult, but it just seems like you know more than ya let on.

would the fact the the 3.4 is OBD I have anything to do with the effects differing between cars? the cooling systems from 3.4 to 3.8 are different, and i can understand how the PCM may control some part of the cooling system on the 3.8...isnt the 3.4 PCM's only cooling function operating the fan?

well i'm not very confident (lately)
i seem to blow up alternators, drop **** into tiny crevasses in my car ( i think i have 3 or 4 screwdrivers somewhere near my air deflector) :(
i break spark plug wires when i try to change them, break bolts off egr pedastals etc etc (these are all within the last 2 weeks)
anyone who is familiar with my top end project, i had to buy a new UIM and LIM cuz i broke stuff on both those too.
if anyone wants to poke fun at me, now is a good time cuz i do kinda suck and have to ask stupid questions and make up for my dumb mistakes.
i'm goin to bed cuz i have to work in 4 hrs, but thanks for the help and i'm sure tomorrow will bring some more of them with an update.
