  • anyone know the size of the crankshaft bolt

I'm contemplating pulling the balancer tomorrow to replace the oil seal but I want to make absolutely sure I have the right size socket, a standard 15/16 (I believe that was the size) seem to fit somewhat snugly a 24mm seem to have a bit too much play so I'm thinking either it's a 15/16 or maybe a 23mm??(don't have that size tools jump from 22mm to 24mm :( )

I have an 18 inch breakover bar with a 4 ft cheater pipe plan to put the car in gear and use the parking brake, have a prybar to jam in the flywheel as another resort if needed.

Anyway I want to try to make absolutely sure i have the right size socket on before I go for this and I figured someone here who is way better at remembering these random things than I am would know off the top of their head.

    thanks

Re: anyone know the size of the crankshaft bolt

Hmm, I can check tomorrow if you like. My dad luckily had a ton of huge sockets I had at my disposal that I found while changing my timing chain. I just don't remember what I used. I'll check it out when I get off work around noon-1pm eastern tomorrow and post up.

Also supposedly those bolts are torque to yield which means you're suppose to replace them if you ever take them off. Well I didn't replace mine and it's been ok so far. As far as the camshaft bolt goes.. that was another story. It was also very hard to find.

If you do run into trouble with snapping threads or whatnot when you put the bolts back on there was a reference somewhere here on this site that gave me the part number I used with gmparts.com I think it was, to get the bolt I needed.

Anyways, I've gone overboard as usual. And as always good luck.

You will need a new bolt since their TTY.

Re: anyone know the size of the crankshaft bolt

anytime something is TTY that means you get a new one when you are taking it out. PERIOD. Never try and get by with reusing TTY bolts, sure it works sometimes but for the majority it is bad to reuse one.

For the two that were debating it, the OP who started the thread received his answer for the size he needs. No need for the nonsense debating over a TTY bolt's use

No problem, the only reason I know this is because i'm trying to get the same bolt off myself and a 23mm socket fits it lol but mine wont budge :( Stupid junk car! :spank:

Why don't you pick one up while you're at autozone tomorrow? I've got like a 3ft long 1/2in from there. It's exactly what I used to remove mine.
