• Trying to make a copy of my key

Well today i brought my key into home depot to make a copy of it just in case, and i was told that there was an electric part of it, because there was that little rubber part half way down the key with a little piece of metal in it. So they couldnt make a copy. I have a 2000 firebird, is it true that you cant make copies? What should i do if that is the case?

You can get them at the dealer... its like $27-35.

but you can copy the door key at home depot just fine.

if u lose the ignition key, just go to the dealership with your regestration and picture ID and they will look up which chip is used by the vin number. there are 12 different chips i believe...

It is hardly a "chip" - it is a resistor

You can still get a copy from the dealer if you have the registration(and your ignition was never changed)

But I'd just bite the bullet and get the key. Its retarted but on the bright side it makes it harder to steal the car.

which is good because are cars are a joke to break into. I can get into an f-body in 30 seconds

normal locksmiths also have GM 'pellet keys' for a franction of the cost that a dealer will charge you. my local Ace Hardware made me an extra pellet key for $8 bucks. they have a little machine that reads which 'pellet' is on the key and then use the appropriate blank.
