    I am trying to find out some information about engines; specifically short, long, and big blocks. Does anybody know of a site where I can get any info on them?

    don't know of a site but i will tell ya what i know about them. short block is just the block, crank, pistons, rings, rods, but no heads. a long block is a short block with heads. and a big block is any engine above 400 CID i think, correct me if i am wrong on that guys.

          Incorrect. It works alot of the time on older motors, but even then is not failsafe (396 by Chevy used to be a Big Block). And now, Gen 3 small blocks can go WAY over 400ci.

            they used to make a 350 big block
            help me build the ultimate sleeper soon ill have a lot more mods than i can list and watch out for the spikes. 02 firebird

              well, if the size isnt what makes it a big block, what does?

                It's not the cubic inch displacement that makes the big block. The big block engine is just that, a different type of engine where the block is physically bigger than the "small block"
                2001 Camaro, 3.8 v6. Five speed. Red. SLP Torque arm, SLP CAI, adj. panhard bar, lcas, eibach springs, 3.73 gears and Zexel-Torsen T-2 LSD.

                    Yeah, you could.. The cubic inches of a motor is just a math equation of the volume of one cylinder multiplied by how many cylinders there are.

                        I think big/small blocks has to do w/the size of the bore before overboring. Doesn't apply to all motors though, as the Poncho 326~455 have basically the same size blocks, jsut different bore & main size, but can interchange cams & heads (w/slight notching e.g 350 H.O.)

                          Big blocks are seriously just BIG blocks. They're HUGE. It's based on physical exterior dimensions. Displacement has nothing to do with it. The LPE 427TT Corvette uses a small block design. The small block can go well beyond 400 cubic inches though. Big block cams and cranks are longer than small block parts if that helps you understand it. Anybody want to add anything else or correct me if I'm wrong?
