  • how does the odometer work?

i have a 95, so its the roll-over type odometer.

i just changed my rear end gears from 3.23s to 3.73s.

i know its causing my speedo to report incorrectly.

but is it affecting my odometer as well?

how does the odometer get its signal? what formula does it use? or is it totally mechanical?

Yeah it's influencing the odometer, 'cause the car "thinks" it's going the speed registered on the speedometer.

      i was afraid of that.

are you 100% sure? i know it would be like that for the digital odometers, but i thought the rollover ones might be different.

99.97% sure. The odometer is based on vehicle speed over time, so I would assume if the speedometer was reading fast, so would the odometer.

I am quite sure as well, however I went from 3.23 to 3.42 so I don't notice it as much, only 5.9%. You have a 15.5% difference..

            ahh well.

the speedo i could live with being inaccurate.

            but not the odo.

i guess its as good of an excuse as any to finally get a tune from fastchip. got quoted $300 plus shipping.

fix the gear ratio and tire size.
adjust the shift points for the gears.
            firm up the shifts.
            mild performance tune.
            fans come on earlier.
raise rev and top speed limiters (dont think i want my rev limiter upped.)

            not toooooooooo bad.

once i get that there computer/electrical engineering durgree, im going to end this nontuneable bull**** once and for all. even if itll 17 some odd years late.

remember, if you don't fix it, your car will appear more valuable than it is...

lower mileage on your odometer than the car has actually traveled.

Going from 3.23 to 3.73, the speed would register faster than you were actually going though.
