• Seems like a misfire, but it's not.....Help!!!-->

I'm getting what sounds and feels like a misfire from the engine (1999 3.8). It makes a barely audible "thump" from the exhaust, and I can just feel it, and it's instantaneous. Sometimes it will do it multiple times when I'm acclerating, and I can feel the car shuddering from it, and the car is noticeably slower because of it.
I stopped at a shop today, and checked for codes, but everything, the engine and the transmission, were clean, no misfires, nothing, current, or in history. I can't figure it out. A few suggestions and guesses have been a bad injector, or maybe the cat getting plugged up. It's just started in the last week, and has gotten worse over the last several days. Anybody?? Thanks.

Fuel filter clogged???

edit: I just noticed that the only check you did was to try and pull codes. If you only pulled codes then how do you know it's not a missfire?? A misfire won't always throw an SES light right away. I would suggest a plug and wire change.

I thought any type of misfire would at least throw some kind of code. Crap. It has new plug wires, so it better not be those. Next will be the plugs, if necessary.

Random misfires won't throw a code it takes something really extreme like a miss on the same cylinder a bunch of times in a row to make the SES light blink and set a code. it really sounds like plugs or wires, there was a recall on plug wires, but i do not know if it applies to 99's or not, but it is worth checking out.

Well I will go out on a limb ;) and say a bad coil pack. It in only does this after the car warms up right? If so it is a heat soaked coil pack

Yeah, Redbird is right it could be a coil pack too.

Cool, I'll check the coil pack, the thought crossed my mind before, but I dismissed it pretty quick. I'd rather have to change those than the plugs, after my experience with changing the wires.
I'll have to keep an eye on it in the mean time, and see if it is only after it warms up. Thanks all.

when i first got my MSD DIS-4 ignition I thought it was that but it was the coil packs. First disconnect the wires from the coil packs and mark them. Then get a voltmeter and touch the black tip to ground and red to positive side of the terminal on the coil. If u got volts its the wires, but more than likely its the coil. So after that remove the bolts from the coil and remove it. Then check the terminals underneth the same way. If there is voltage ther but none on the coil its the bad coil. And if u had to continue checking the ICM. good luk
