EGR broke again??

ok heres the dilly.

my car will sometimes throw an SES light when Decelerating from 55mph or over, meaning i will be on cruise control at 55 and then when i turn it off and the car goes down about 5mph the SES light comes on .

well, from all my understandings this was clearly the EGR valve throwing a code, but now i'm not too sure.

I bought a used but working EGR for my car from EBAY, the same place other members have bought them from for about 50$.

anyhow, the code came back on yesterday under the same circumstances. :rant:

now, you might say "well just get the code scanned" but thers a number of problems with that, # 1 being that if you own an obd 1.5 car like the 3.4's some of them are IMPOSSIBLE to read codes on, you can't take them to an autozone or advanced and get them read, it just doesn't work on our cars, you can't even do it manually with the paperclip method. On top of that, my car only throws the code under these certain conditions so it would be inconvenient to have to wait for it to come on and then get it scanned.


can anyone lend some advice, either on what you think my code is or a better way to get it scanned?

i'm open here to all advice, this thing is starting to tick me off, i just want my car to stop throwing codes, and if it's not the EGR then i want to fix whatever is wrong.

just bc ur getting an egr code doesnt mean it is the egr that is bad. there could be a clog somewere. what i have come across and i no at least 3 or 4 ppl with a 3.4 is the computer for w.e reason is not sending singal so the valve is not opening. one guy swaped out computers.

just bc ur getting an egr code doesnt mean it is the egr that is bad. there could be a clog somewere. what i have come across and i no at least 3 or 4 ppl with a 3.4 is the computer for w.e reason is not sending singal so the valve is not opening. one guy swaped out computers.

i wouldn't mind swapping out my comp. but if i'm not sure its the comp then i don't want to mess with it.

either get a scanning that lets veiw everything that the computer sees or take to a shop.

yeah, shops charge like 100$ just for diagnostics now adays.

but i suppose it would be worth it if i can find out what the prob is.

btw, can they scan the car even if the code isn't currently ON?

bastard 3.4's were 95 only i thought, OBD I w/ OBD II plug, and your's is a 93...you shouldnt have a problem with that

you can use an obd1 scan tool. but your car has an obd2 style connector. so just look at the pinouts and figure it out.

the only other thing being tested with the egr during the drive cycle could be the evap system.

either way. youre never going to fix it, no one has. mine still throws a light. only worry about it if you cant pass emissions inspection.

dont forget they dumped the rwd 3.4l for the 3.8l partly because of emissions. like the 95 3.8ls for california.

yah u can cuz it stores the codes. but what u want to do is get a scanner the lets see every componat on the car. like at my school we have a scanner that u hook up and u can go to every sensor on the car and see if there working or not. u can even go to the spark plugs and see if there fireing right.100 dam thats alot. shop around here are like 35-50 bucks

i'm telling you, i've never been able to get the damn thing scanned, blizzard is right, my life is cursed.

technically i could ask my uncle to take a look at it, he's a gm mechanic and actually used a scanning tool on my car once and found out i was running lean in a cylinder bank so i replaced my o2 sensor and it was fine after that.

maybe i'll give him a call.....

thanks for the advice guys, but keep in mind my life is cursed so it might set on fire if i try to scan the thing.
