anyone have any good info on how to change the evaporator, I have had a problem with loosing coolant, I bought a sniffer at harbor freight and it went nuts when I slid it in the vent near the passenger side door.
I saw something about pulling out the glove box and the panel below that and it's right there is this right or am I way off?

Losing coolant or refrigerant?? Coolant would be going through the heater core, which is easily accessible from a panel behind the glove box. The evaporator core on the other hand has refridgerant running through it from the A/C system. It is a bit deeper inside, but it's apparently possible to remove it without pulling the whole dashboard. I've never done it that way though.

I think I might be loosing refrigerant through the evaporator core.
I found a link that referenced the haynes manual, so I dug my old one out and it tells me that I have to pull the heater coil then cut some plastic part which you epoxy back into place. As usual it's short on detail (which is why I didn't look there first) but I think i see now where to go. I'm going to have to track down the leak for sure first. I'm thinking this is going to be one of those things I"m just going to have to live with (refill with freon a few times) until it's cool enough outside to work on.
Pulling the evap core looks like a 3 or 4 hour job if everything goes right and it's just too hot outside to be working on that stuff for me.

well once it leaks down enough I'm gonna recharge with the freon with the dye already added and see if it's the compressor or something OTHER than the evap core. The parts lady at napa gave me the number of a local place where she said they sell the bigger AC parts at a more reasonable price than NAPA because that's all they do.
One of the perks of living in the big city, if you know where to go you can find almost anything for a good price. Until then I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that it's not the evap core.
