  • help overheating need help

hi i drive a 98 3.8 camaro, and my car overheated yesterday, and i checked all the fluids and they all check out. i realized that the fan was only going at one speed, and did not go faster as the car heated up. i know its not the water pump becuse i changed it a month ago, and i flushed the radiator, and changed the fluids. i think its a relay, but then again it could be something else. has this happened to anyone, and what could it be. thanks

It might be your thermostat. Go buy a new thermostat, might as well get a low temperature one while you're at it, and replace that. That may be the only problem.

finally...someone who is actually overheating. yeah, i think your fan is messed up. maybe you could try a manual fan switch to control it yourself but you so need to get that fixed. i cant really help you about the fan

did you put the thremo in up side down ? the spring should be down the little tower should point up
feel your pipe to the thermo if its really really hot coolent is flowing.

sounds like your high speed fans are not comeing on, there are 2 fans in our cars, one just sits there till the car get hot and turns on and then if it get hotter the other fan come on full speed and cool it down.

there are 2 fans cause one comes on when your a/c needs it, if it only overheats at a light but not while cruising look into your fan and its componets..... temp sensor, relay, and fan motor. if not look into stuck thermostat, radiator cap.

my Ac is off and they both turn on </font>[/QUOTE]its really based on cfm of your stock fans, some manufactors run both fans for cooling and for ac, some run one and the other for ac, then some run just 1 fan. the prob with one fan is it runs for much longer times so they went two to increase cfm.

okay the fan has three relays. two gray and one black. but beside the color i dont know which one controls the high speed of the fan. i also don know where the temp sensor is for the fan. the car was running fine after i installed the new water pump, thermostat, and flushed the radiator. ohh and all the fuses are good too. man if there is one thing i hate is a car that is overheating.

i had the exact same problem on my 92, there are these coupling things in the top of the engine , similar in looks to a pcv or spark plug, and i eventually blew my heads, and gasket. my car slow leaked water, 1200 $ later i find these dumb cheap peices that were the problem, i am not certian if this is on your car but look into it

Nick, there is one way to definately fix this problem. Go out and buy a 160* thermostat. With that installed in my car, my engine temp has NEVER went about 200*, and usually sits around 180.
