  • first spark plug & wire swap

I am a broke *** college student and my car just started misfiring. I just bought some plugs today and the wires are on order. Problem is, I have never done a plug and wire swap before and I refuse to pay a dealer $400+ to unscrew a few plugs and wires. Is there any step by step instructions for first timers such as myself to help me out so that i do not mess anything up? And what is the gap supposed to be set at for a 2000 V6 firebird? Thanks.

    gap is .060 i believe?

to be honest it is cake, man. It took me an hour the first time to do plugs and wires, and 20 minutes every time after that.

Just take your time, don't get frustrated. the 2000+'s are EASY, be glad you don't have a 95-99.

just unbolt every wire, then undo the plugs on one bank. redo plugs, new wires. do the next bank. you'll need a 1 and 3 inch socket extension

factory setting is .060, but I hear .057ish is good, gives room for expansion.

you basically got it right, you unscrew it and put the new one in.

Only suggestion I can give is, do one plug, and one wire at a time. This way you avoid mixing them up and getting misfires.

Quick question: do I pull the wires out by hand that are connected to the plugs?

yep... they will be on pretty tight, I think my stockers actually seperated from the boot.

Try wiggiling them to get them loose.

Why would it be harder on my 98 than it is on his 2000?

2000s on up have tubular manifolds where as the pre 2000 have log type manifolds.

vise grips were my friends when I finally changed mine. If you're unsure, pick up a Haynes manual

I found a 3 inch extension, but I can not for the love of god find a 1 inch extension. Is it necessary for the job? What are the extensions for?
