Need Help- Humming Noise From Engine

ever since i bought my camaro it's been making this humming noise when i have it running i think the bearings in the alternator are going not sure does anyone else have this noise?? wehn i bought it the guy said it always made this noise and he was never really worried about it.

Your belt might be the culprit. I'd pick one up. While you have your old belt off, check for binding or lateral movement in the alternator, AC, tensioner pulley, etc.

Could be the power steering pump also.

could be a number of things.. I'd try to isolate the sound and go from there.. then again as someone suggested a belt isn't necessarily a bad place to start..

Man I've had the same hum since I bought my car a year ago. I had it checked out and it was the power steering pump. I've seen a lot of other birds and they make the same noise. It's kind of annoying, but it's not hurting anything.. I guess it's just a defect from the company.

Are you talking about a steady hum at all times or the buzz niose that ALL GM power steering pumps make when they turn under a load? If it's a steady, constant hum, you can probably do something about it.

it's a constant hum, as soon as i turn it over it starts, when the belt is turning it's making the noise. it doesn't get louder it's always the same level and doesn't change even when i turn.

turn your AC to the on position an wait a couple seconds and see if it goes away.
i had the same problem and it turned out to be a bearing in my AC. could be something else, but this should tell you wether its the AC or not.

it is common if not normal. If it changes with the pitch of your rpms then it would be a bearing as it spins faster with higher rpms. If it is not the common alternator whine then check your belt for cracks. That may solve your problem or you have to live with it like the rest of us.
