On my auto, I removed the torque converter shield and used a screwdriver to prevent the gear from turning.
I believe Haynes says to put manuals into 5th gear...Cheers!
Scott
1994 Camaro 3.4L V6
Flows, Underdrive Pulley, and a 180 Thermo

First just so your aware do a search. This topic has come up many times before. To answer your question you can place a screwdriver or something solid that won't bend as you slowly loosen the bolt holding the alternator pulley in place. Just be carefull not to bend the fan blades of the alternator. You can hold it in addition to having a solid metal piece keep it from moving. The same goes for tightening the bolt for the pulley. As for the crank the best choice is an impact wrench. You can use it for the alternator one as well but I had no problem with the alternator one.
