  • Oil Question - not related to previous posts

My car ownership guide says use 5-30 oil, my mechanic said I can use thicker oil, like 20-30 and it will be fine..

so if I use something in between like 10-30 is that cool?

Yes. Depending on your application and the temperature of your climate, you can run 10-30.

Your oil pressure gauge reading will probably go up, because you're switching to a thicker oil.

Remember, your oil pump has to push that thicker oil too, but I don't think that should be to big a problem.

The question is why would you want to? When the engine is warmed up they all will be very close in thickness (30). The 5W-30 will be thinner and flow better at startup, which seems to be a good thing.

I always run 10w-30, but you're in a colder climate so I dunno, you might want to run a thicker (thinner? which one is better for cold?)

My theory is to run 5w in the winter since the oil is thinner, it will flow better when its cold. Then run 10w in the summer for a little thinker protection. I dunno I might try that this summer.

I've been using 10w-30 here in California since it doesn't get that cold though this next winter I'll try it just for the heck of it.
