Re: Replaced Oil pressure Sender, Now car wont start

Took the car to the shop this morning and they told me the fuel pump wasn't coming on. They want $520.00 parts and labor to replace the fuel pump(part is $160.00).

Do you guys think a novice D.I.Y. mechanic like myself can replace the fuel pump? Any tips?

    - Side note. The battery in the car tested bad at auto zone. Is it possible that the bad battery might affect the fuel pump? I still want to put a new battery in the car just to see what happens, but the bottom line is the fuel pump wasn't coming on.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. You were spot on about the fuel pump.

battery won't cause it to go bad.. do it yourself! you either have to A. drop the tank.. booo or B. cut an access panel there is a write up somewhere for it.. its not bad at all..

Right about now, I'd be thinking your shop is screwing you. Sabotaging something "safe" and unrelated to the work they're doing. In hopes you'll come back and complain about it. So they can tell you it's something completely different, and then hope you pay them $$$ to fix it. Welcome to 1970.

And hey. Maybe not. But funny you had no problems with your fuel pump before they looked at the car. And coincidently the very same day you pick it up, it's giving you MAJOR problems.

Fuel pumps can go out at any time with no warning.

So fuel pumps can go out at anytime? I never noticed any symptoms of a bad fuel pump.

What are the symptoms of a dying fuel pump?

^ Stumble, Knock and dies is exactly what happened to me.Originally I thought fuel was getting to the engine because I would hear a slight sound when I turned the ignition to on.But the sound is very different than the sound in my other car. the sound, which I assume is the fuel pump, last longer(about 2 seconds) and is louder than the sound I would hear from the firebird(which has more of a clicking sound than a longer "eeerrghh". It's crazy because when I was at the shop I couldn't even hear that when I cranked it with the mechanic and he said, "ah...Fuel pump".

The thing is they were cranking it a lot before they even checked for the fuel pump sound(first they checked for spark). I tried turning the ignition in my other car a lot and after about 8 turns I wouldn't hear the fuel pump until I let it rest for a bit.

I guess I will get a second opinion at some point. But first I gotta start small and replace the bad battery just in case since I need a good battery anyway.

you can replace the fuel pump yourself, get a walhbro or something of the sort and do the trap door method, thats what i'm gonna do.

Just put a brand new battery in there and while it cranked much stronger, the engine still didn't catch censor. so I guess I must proceed with the bad fuel pump theory. :(
