i curbed my car the other day at about 40 mph and my wheels spun out of allignment. Now my steering wheel points left when the car goes straight. I am sure i need to replace my ball joints on both sides of the car, but that seems to be the only problem.
does anyone have any idea where i could get a new set of ball joints for a decent price and how i would go about replacing them?
Take it to the alignment shop and have them look at it. Ball joints aren't that expensive... lower ball joints look to be about 15-16 per and upper ball joints look to be about 55 per.
Ouch... I spun out and hopped a curb in my car doing about 30 mph and I'm still paying for all the stuff that was damaged. Alignment, front bumper chipped/scratched and cracked in one spot, tore off the front gfx, bent rims, popped tires. I wont be driving like a dick on the streets anymore.
If all you need are ball joints and an alignment you're really pretty lucky.
well, i also messed up the fender but thats only $150 from a junkyard.
But... i just realized that it wasnt the ball joints, it was my hub bearings. :( I have no idea what these even are let alone how expensive they would be to replace. My mechanic said that they were loose and need to be replaced before he can do an allignment.
does anyone know what a hub bearing is or how much i can get new ones for?
Hub bearing is the bearing that goes inside the hub where it attaches to the steering knuckle. it is attached by 4 bolts. The steering knuckle is the thing you see connecting the upper arm to the lower arm. Its about $272 about .8 hrs of labor to change the hub and bearing assembly for a mechanic. Take out ur wheel, take off ur caliber, take off ur rotor, unplug the speed sensor and unbolt the hub and bearing assembly from the back of the knuckle.
In case you are still wondering what it is, imaging a door knob, the door knob is the hub and the base of the knob is the knuckle, the bearing allows the knob to spin. And your wheel goes on the wheel hub, therefor allowing it to spin and still be attached to the car.
I think your tie rod is prolly messed up if your wheels are pointing the wrong direction. At worse you might need a new rack. And after they install it and the alignment is still out of spec., they will have to replace the arms or even the knuckle.
