it should be idling at 750 rpm, which is halfway between the mark just below the 1 and the 1

Does it seem like the engine is reving high? Or is it a regular idle? When you tap the gas does it go away or does the rev stay higher?

no, your car is not supposed to idle at 2000 RPM

If the 98 was not drive by wire, and the RPMs are steady, but high, I would check the IAC. I've had two of them die on prior cars and it results in a high but steady idle.

so i cant adjust the idle.. right?

how do i check the IAC? what else should i check?

i made sure the little part for the idle is on correctly.
then cleaned some other part. new pcv valve. cleaned the maf sensor. it does get a code for the egr valve.

Since it is a 98' you can adjust how much the TB blade is open at idle, it is on the drivers side of the TB. There is a adjusting nut that allows how much the TB blade closes, just unscrew it alittle to see if it helps, You can't adjust the IAC, you can take it out and clean the carbon off of it, whichs works most of the time. But I would check the adjusting nut for the TB blade.

A fluctuating idle is probably not the IAC, then. The fluctuation is probably the computer activating the IAC to try and compensate for whatever the real problem is.

so what do u think it is?

i adjusted that nut and it didnt adjust the idle at all.

could the EGR be causing it?

would it idling at 2 be the reason for me using so much gas? i go through gas quickly.

i'd really like to figure this out. is it the sensors or something electrical?

it probably be good on gas if it idles at 1.

                          its a 98 firebird 3.8 5speed

Could it be a small vac leak? I know that can cause the car to rev either higher or lower.

What EGR code are you getting? Your EGR could be your vacuum leak if something is lose or broken on it.
