On a 98' 3.8, what is the normal operating temp if you sit idle at a stop light for about 5 mins? I have a 180 TSTAT and it works fine, but when I sit @ a light it goes up rather fast, but once I get moving it comes back down. And the bottom reads 160 and the top 260....with three notches in the middle. What are the temps at those other notches, hell I may sound novice but I have no fuggin' clue

The temp gauges in our cars are the most inaccurate gauges in the world! My temp gauge reads the same as stock when I have the fans programmed for the 160º thermo... however, Autotap shows the accurate temp reading everytime.
The temperature sending unit for the dashboard and the temperature sending unit for the PCM are in two different locations. One is located in the water pump housing, and the other is located on the bank 1 cylinder head. Since the cylinder heads are the hottest part of the engine, it's no wonder why usually Autotap, Freescan and Datamaster show a lower PCM nominal temperature reading than what you read on the dashboard.
At certain running conditions, the difference between the two temperature sources can differ as much as sixty degrees. Use the temperature sensor in the water pump as your guide for actual coolant temperature.

Wouldn't you add the two numbers and divide by 2.

I have a stock Thermo and my temperature barely even moves, once it's warmed up. 99% of the time it's like 2mm left of the 210° verticle mark. And when it's starts gettin hot from idling a while, it moves like a mm to the right, but still not pass the verticle 210° mark.

Hey everyone! I've been trying to remove my transmission for two days now! I need to replace the clutch. Only thing I've got left holding the transmission...
