• How much HP is possible?

Before I attempt to sell my 3.4 to get a 3.8, can somebody honestly tell me if there is any chance in hell to get my car over 200hp without forced induction or nitrous? Anyone have an idea of how much hp we can make a 3.4 spit out? I love the car, just want more power. Thanks.

I second that! Me and Dave here have to get our cars through smog every two years, so it limits our ability to go balls out with the mods. I was just going to go with a new rear end, intake, exhaust and call it a day. I'd like to do something wonderful to the engine without getting popped by smog guys.

There was a guy who's sig said he milled his heads. I forgot who this was. I was really impressed with this mod. That would pump up the compression considerably. I'd just be worried that I'd screw up some electronic gizmo and I'd have a problem when I was finished. My car runs way too good for a teardown like that, but maybe if I blew a head gasket or something down the road... The only way to get more HP out of our engines is to make it more effecient or raise the compression somehow.

Maybe I'll just have to wait for a turbo kit to come out for it.

That 3.8 looks better every day.

Yeah, it does look nice, but I've babied my car since it was... well... a baby. I still love it. I'm thoroughly convinced that it is going to run forever. I've also spent 5 years paying this sucker off and it didn't even come close to retaining it's value. Blue book is very low in my opinion. I could trade in mine for a used 3.8, but I couldn't be sure it was treated right. I could trade mine in for a new one and look forward to about 3 years of more payments. That, to me, isn't worth 40 HP.

you don't have to wait for them to put a turbo kit out for our 3.4L. just try to find a really good shop that does custom turbo jobs and is willing to do your car. i looked on ebay and they sell decent turbo's pretty cheap.

Yeah, there is a shop round here that probably can do it, at least that is what a friend told me.

So is there no one out there with a 3.4 pushing 200hp?

94 and Shadly, before I sold my 95, here's what I was looking at doing, and what I found out:
Increasing the compression to between 9.25:1 and 9.5:1
Putting 19lb/hr injectors on (Summit has a set of 8 injectors for like $230)
Getting a 3-angle valve job
I already had Accel coils, and had the plugs gapped out .010" over stock (.055" total)
I tried to find out if anyone knew if the PCM for th3 3.4 could handle those changes, or if it could be reprogrammed. One guy I got ahold of in Kentucky, or somewhere around there, said that he didn't think it could, but he hadn't gotten into the fuel tables for the 3.4 He also said that he knew a couple of guys who had dumped several thousand dollars into their 3.4s, with no appreciable gains in power.
I think that the 3.4 has a lot of potential, but the main limitations are money, and the PCM. With the 3.8s being standard now, and already producing more power, nobody has devoted any attention to the software for the 3.4s in the Camaros. There are a few that have done mods with the 3.4s in earlier Cavalier Z24s and such, but those are DOHC cars, and so are programmed completely different.
As an aside, one of the Z24 pages said that the Chevy team that designed the 3.4 DOHC for the Z24 had gotten 275hp out of the engine. Between that engine, and the new 3.4 that's in the Malibu'sm etc., there is some definate power making capability, problem is, the heads and intakes, which are the keys to the extra power, are made for the cross-mounted (front wheel drive) design. The throttle body on the intake would end up on the back of the engine, and the manifold bolt holes are different on the heads.
That's what I've found out.

Wow, outstanding research Guardsman. I would think the block for a DOHC engine would be completely different anyway just based on the routing of the timing chain. DOHC would be an obvious visual red flag by smog, unfortunately. But heads and intake are definitely the starting point for these engines. I'm not quite sure about the effect milling down the heads would have on the idle or smoothness. I've read about some S/C guys getting 9-10lbs. of boost before their rings start to leak compression so this sucker is durable enough for some additional compression. I'm just not so sure about that SES light. Will it trip with elevated compression? I know it will trip with detonation and raised oil pressure, but there are steps you can take to prevent that from happening. I would think you wouldn't have to reprogram your pcm. After all, the only thing that's changing is how hard of a squeeze you're putting on that air/fuel mixture. You're not really flowing MORE into your combustion chamber. I don't know, I might be way off. I mean, some of the fastest cars in the world have small cubic inches, they're just kept on the edge all the time.

Hey Guardsman, Did you ever find out how much all that stuff was gonna cost?

Also how much were you able to sell your 95 for?

Uh huh. I've seen your mod list. I think you've modded everything you can unbolt. :D
Sweet setup. I've been watching it evolve. I want to see what that cam does. Good luck!

Hey looks like there is hope. Tiago, if ya don't mind, about how much has gone into your car to get it to 190hp? I'd definitely think about keeping my car if it doesn't cost me my left and right nut to get up there in that range. Thanks.
