My Dad and I are going to be replacing my car's spark plugs this weekend. The other day we looked at the engine to see how hard it would be to access the plugs and took one out to see how hard it would be. He was wondering if anyone knew what is the purpose of the spring boot on the plug?
Also other then the new plugs and putting them in, what else should we need/have to do?
If its your first time make sure you put enough time aside. Are long front ends dont make it easy. If your doing plugs why not tackle some new wires as well?
I was also about to do this, most likely tomorrow. Do we need to keep the metal boot protectors around the plugs and wires? I get the feeling the boots of my MSD wires won't fit in them.
I changed my plugs last summer. You definately need to set a lot of time aside if this is your first time doing them (especially if its your first time on these cars). I think I only did two of them from above and the rest of them from underneath the car. It can get very frustrating and hard to reach and see what you are doing so you definately need to take a lot of patience with you.
I don't remember exactly what I used when doing mine but all you need is basic hand tools.
1996 Polo Green Metallic Camaro:<br />SLP CAI, Carsound/Magnaflow 3\" in/out cat, Flowmaster 2.5\" cat-back... sounds great
Yeah, I got halfway done today and then my girlfriend showed up so I'll have to finish tomorrow. The worst part of the experience is barely being able to fit a socket and extension into there. There is very little room which makes taking out and putting the new plugs in a bit of a pain. It also makes putting on the new MSD wires rather difficult cause of that snap lock thing they got going. I can't seem to pop them on since I have no room to move my arm around in there.
Oh, and I remembered that I bought the boot covers so those don't fit around the metal boot protectors. I just put the metal ones to the side and am planning on covering the MSD boots with the covers.
Yea, like I said its not easy at all, we have long front ends and there is little room. Its just a pain in the ***, but you'll feel good knowing you have new plugs and wires in there. Also if you had any plugs or wires that were shot, you could see, better mpg, smoother idle, and little more power. Pain in the a$$, but worth it
Yep, finished all of that today and it felt good. I don't know if its just in my head but I feel the difference after the new plugs and wires and Seafoam treatment. Huge pain in the *** though, but definitely a fun time. Can't wait til next time.
Well I bought the plugs, anti-seize, and the other grease today. Now I just need to get wires. Hmm no one around here has them so I'm going to have to order them and they won't be here on time for Saturday :(
I'm astounded that people are actually complaining about doing plugs on tubular manifold cars! Try doing them on a 95-99! #4 is near impossible! I was able to do plugs in under 15 minutes on my 2000....
It wasnt hard...it was a pain in the ***. When I did it was my first time doing it, and first time really working on a car. Sorry everyones not a great mechanic like you bird of prey

Gonna agree with this and also add that complaining is one of my biggest strengths :P
