  • Replacment 3800 options

I have a 96 camaro 3800/5 speed. It has a spun main bearing. I need a new engine. I have not had any luck in my area with any 3.8 from Camaro's or Firebirds. I saw that one of the members here put a 2003-3800 from a buick FWD car. I was able to find a 2002 impala 70K. Junk yard says it will not work. They also say it has to be from a camaro or firebird

Does anyone know if that will work? It is a 3800 "K" motor. Is there any list of cars that have engines that will fit?

Please bear with me I am a bit on the old school side. This is my 5th camaro but my first 4th gen.

I have read that the motor drops out of the bottom. For those of us without a lift is that still the best way to do it? Will it pull from the top? Like I said before I am old, I never dropped a motor before :)

Since you're already doing an engine swap... why not drop in an LS1?

      Re: Replacment 3800 options

I need this car as a commuter. While the different of 26 MPG and 30 MPG does not seem like alot. When you drive 110 miles a day it is. There is also a budget. I do not think I can get LS1/6speed in decent shape for about the 1K range.

Edit: Plus I had to promise the wife this was going to be a repair NOT a project. I have too many projects now :)

You could get an lt1/harness/t56 for about 1k though.

Even if I did find a deal like that it would go in my 67. Around here the 6 speeds trannies are selling for more then 1K

you can pull it out of the top too. That's how I did mine (2x now); pull the radiatior, exhaust manifolds, and upper intake and it and the transmission will come right out of the top. You could probably even do it without pulling the radiator, as I put mine back in (motor+trans) with it and the fans still in place

I read somewhere that the FWD cars do not have the correct or drilled holes for the starters as they are ont he opposite side. Not sure though. I got lucky and found a used one on this site a few years ago becuase the guy did an LS1 swap. Good luck finding one.
Thought about pulling yours and then just rebuilding bottom end? I've done that before, just had crank reground, new rod/main bearings, and went with it.
..and these other fbodies, any 2nd gens in there?

GM uses the same motor to service both front and rear wheel drive vehicles. 89017861. the only thing to change is simple stuff like the oil filter adapter and oil pan.

GM only services the long block, oil pan to valve covers.

jasper sells a remanufactored engine with the same warranty and the same price that GM sells a new engine. also with the factory engine it is a nation wide warranty and can be warrantyed at any gm dealer in the usa. with jasper you have to go to a certified jasper installer which is harder to find than a gm dealer.

I used a block out of a 98 LeSabre for my Corolla swap. No issues at all, just get the right gaskets and be prepared to swap everything else over.
