i have a 98 firebird.. and recently while driving down the street the headlights out of nowhere poped up.. The switch was off.. But somtimes they shut for just a minute or two and reopen.. What could this be??? When i turn the car off and open the door they shut.. but when i stick the key in and begin to start they come back up every time?? I just finally pulled the fuse in the daytime so they dont pop up in daylight!!

Are they makeing any noise? When you turn them on and off does it seen like they travel up and down smoothly? A few things thats happened to me is the gear in the actuator started to strip and it started to do funky things and when the nut that holds the rod that lifts the assembly came loose they would pop up and down, but that never happened while in motion. While your driveing is a tough one. Sounds like a flakey conection somewhere but as I like to say... without seeing it??? It's all just a guess98 bird
160,000 miles
13\'s? Just happy it\'s starts every morning.

Traded in @164,000 On a 2001 Formula

Re: headlights go up and down????
Again, I'm bringing up another old thread, but has anyone ever found the cause and/or solution to this?
I have an '02 Firebird that the headlights pop up and turn on whenever I turn the key on. It started out as me noticing the lights up when I stopped every once in a while, but thought maybe I somehow hit the light switch and popped them up, but now they're always up/on when the key is on. I pulled the fuses for both headlights and they stayed down afterward, but the lights were still on, shining through the headlight cover/bumper gaps. Any thoughts on what the problem could be?

Re: headlights go up and down????
I'm not going to claim i know the answer (I have a Camaro) but based on your description...
First thing I think of is a faulty Daytime Running Light module.
My second guess is that the gears are stripping and don't know when up is up and down is down.

Re: headlights go up and down????
Do you have factory alarm?
Make sure the gears are not stripped out (grinding noise)
if that checks out, check the bump stops on the headlight motor.
If all the checkouts check the headlight control module

Re: headlights go up and down????
I do have the factory alaerm system, which I've noticed will only honk once sometimes now instead of twice like normal. And I cant twll if it's coming from my car or another, but it seems like I've heard random single honks every once in a while (very rare tho).
The headlights go up and down as normal when the key is either in the off position or not in at all. They just stay up and on all the time when the key is on. They also go up and down as "smooth" as they have the entire time that I've owned the car (nearly one year now) and I dont hear any grinding from the gears.
Just yesterday, my battery completely died too, although I'm not sure if that's related or if that has to do with the fact that it had a solar charger and iPod charging all day. But the day before, my phone charged all day and didn't drain the battery at all.
Hope all this helps. I've got the headlight motor fuses pulled during daylight so that they stay down while driving now. I just put the fuses back in when darkness comes to let them pop up.
