• what would it take 3.8 into 91 camaro auto

would I have to change the trans yes/no
would i have to custom make motor mounts yes/now
would I have to use a 4th gens cooling setup yes/no
would speedo and tach and stuff work yes/no

i dont think it would be worth it but a friend is going to buy a 91 camaro($500) with a blown up 3.1 he likes the power my 96 makes and wants to put a 3.8 in it. if not he would like to put a 3.4 in it, but money is kindof an issue. I am telling him it wouldnt be worth it and if anything but a 3.1 I would go with a v8.

I told him i would only help him swap a 3.1 which I figure I could find in the nickle ads for around $300 or so. I have no clue how to do other things like 3.4 into it or things like that.

is the 3.4 and 3.1 the same block yes/no

if it is would the 3.1 intake work on the 3.4 yes/no

if a 3.1 intake would work on a 3.4 i would help him with that, but I dunno.

also, what would I run into trying to put a 4.3 in the thing, same questions as above, but a 4.3 into a 91

any suggestions and tips are appreciated...thanks

I might know someone who''s almost finished this project.

I fact, I might even know someone who did a 2.8--> 3.4 swap, and then did the 3.4-->3800 swap.

same issues as a V8, only you can use stock tach.

See my website for some pics of the swaps.

because, as stated in the first thread, money is an issue.

he'd also need to get a compatable tranny. He could reuse the 7004R w/the 3.4 bloc, technically he could use it for the 3800 too, but then you gotta shift it.

He mentioned the 4.3s, which have plenty of potential, & also for what you pay for an ls-one, you could get a 350 & mod teh hell outa it & go faster than what techno wonder can do.

the kid doesnt want to kill his mileage and he is all ga ga over the fact that my semi powerful 3.8 can get 32-33 mpg on the highway at 80mph

he is stumped at the fact that a 3.8 gets better mileage than a 3.4 and the 3.8 is way faster.

so could I just pull the 3.1 out and bolt the 3.4 in as a replacement or what issues would i run into.

i think the motor mounts would be the same and possibly the tranny and verter. yes/no

so i have narrowed it down to 3.4 into 91 or just 3.1

are the 3.1 autos slow or are they alright for a kid that usually drives a gutless cabriolet convetible.

depends on how you want to do the swap. I did mine differntly from most in that I ket the 3.4 belt pattern. MOst of teh other peeps I know that did the swap just took the 3.4 Long block & transferred all teh 2.8/3.1 over to it. keeps all teh sensors in place, looks still like the stock 2.8/3.1. Change over the motor mount brackets from the 3.1 to the 3.4 (they have the same block bolt pattern) The only big issue is teh pipe plug in the rear of the 3.4 head. This needs to be removed so that the fan temp switch can be transferred. It is best to get a weldidng torch to heat this up hot enough to remove it (yes, it is a pain, but lets you keep the 3.4 heads w/newer valve train compnents.)

The 2.8/3.1-->3.4 swap is relly easy, plus you can always e-bay/sell teh leftover parts to get some $$$$ back. The t-pipe in teh 3rd gens WILL bolt directly up the the exhaust manifolds, plus you get 2 spare O2 sensors w/the swap.

so i can just swap the 3.4 block into the place of the old block (3.1) and keep use the intake from the 3.1 onto the 3.4??

what about the tranny and its bolt pattern, will the flywheel and all bolt right up?

so i will need the Y-pipe from a 4th gen 3.4 right?? and did you say that I had to change the motor mounts the half of the mount on the 3.4 work with the other half thats on the 3rd gen????

the cooling setup shouldnt be to complicated should it.

going to move this to 3rd gen tech, and I fully expect that NONE of this nonsensical questioning of further nonsense will follow it.
