  • Gas splashes out of fill tube during fillup

When I get gas in my 94 Z28, I put the pump into the fill tube, squeeze the handle and after about 10 seconds the pump clicks off and gas blows out the fill tube. And i don't mean a drop or two. I usually leave a small puddle on the ground. I have to run the pump very slowly in order to avoid spilling but it's still a pain because the pump keeps clicking off. Anybody ever have this problem and what was the fix for it?

thats a new one, does this happen at different pumps or the same one?

Mine clicks off, but I've never had gas pour out.

How far are you putting the nozzle into the neck? Sometimes when you push the nozzle too far in and try to get gas it will click off and not pump unless you pump it manually or pull it out from the neck a little. Something to do with the amount of air or pressure, I believe.

        That's my guess, at least.

Venting problem of some sort. I don't know much about the 94 Z's, but vent valve solenoid or pinched vent hose. Happens on all cars, not just the fbodies.

It happens at different stations. I've tried changing the angle of the pump. Pulling the pump out a little bit, halfway, and almost completely out just makes the gas splash further. Is there any kind of screen in the filler neck like anti-siphon? Where does the tank vent? I don't have the service manual yet. I don't know if it vents to the charcoal canister on a fillup or if there is a vent line that runs up the inside of the fill tube.

you need to pump the gas slower, this is a very common f body problem

At the same station, same pump I have no problem filling my 94 Camaro 3.4L V6, it's just the Z28 that has the problem. If it didn't splash out all over the side of the car I probably wouldn't worry about it. I thought about swapping gas tanks except that is such a pita it would be more trouble than its worth. I have a line on a set of service manuals, hopefully that will provide me with some insight.

Does anybody know if the fuel fill tube on our cars can be replaced?

I fixed this problem on my car. It seems the fill tube has a check ball in it and mine was sticking. I pushed a metal rod down the fill tube and managed to free up the check ball. Then I poured some Seafoam in to help disolve the crud that was causing it to stick. I waited a couple of hours to let the Seafoam do its thing then I filled it with gas and no more splashing.
