  • How much to install flywheel and starter?

How much to install flywheel and starter? I have to get this done at a shop because I haven't learned how to do it myself yet. I think they're trying to rip me off. They say $1100 all together. Anybody know how much this should cost ?

the starter is not too hard. it is mounted 'outside' the engine. $75 bucks or less in labor depending on when they start the clock.

The fly wheel is a different matter. 1100 bucks seems high. does it at least include the flywheel and starter? granted this was on an old truck....about 5 years ago....tranny lost 2nd and 3rd gear (three on the tree) I limped it to a good tranny shop (done other work for me) they rebuilt the tranny, had them put new clutch in while they were in there and also turn the flywheel. 750 bucks. About 8 years ago took my barracuda in for a big tranny. Rebuilt the 727, bored k sprague, transgo2, etc... new torque convertor (i supplied) tranny cooler. I let them do all the labor. (my dark apartment living years) $1100.

I would call around. don't mention the starter. check the price on starter at auto store and www.gmpartsdirect.com and also the cost of flywheel and gmpartsdirect.com to compare to see if they are charging you $300 for a starter or somenthing.

$1100 sounds very high. If you are not familiar with these guys...well...you know this already...not all mechanic shops are equal in ability or pricing.

www.gmpartsdirect is selling flywheels for like $100

if that helps. you are looking at $150 in parts, and the rest labor.

Way too expensive.. I actually took my buddy to my mechanic today to get his whole clutch put in and it costed 350$ to have his new clutch put in flywheel sent out and completely redone cause it was chewed and did all the fluids.. 350$ is pretty cheap i think. and starter I'd say 75-100$ tops for that.. Go find a decent mechanic around town or something 1100$ Is INSANE!

I basically ended up paying $410 for a starter to be put on, they said the old one must've been loose or something because one or more of the cones broke on it and that's what made the rattle that I was hearing. I know that's a lot for the starter.I'm not dealing with them any more DEFINITLY

Starters are easy, you can do that yourself with a couple of tools and a Haynes manual. Even for a novice it shouldn't take more than 2 hours. Even our tranny's are not that hard to get out, since they are RWD. It shouldn't take too long for a decent mechanic to take it off, put on a new flywheel, and re-mount the tranny.

I just had a clutch put in and a new flywheel. The flywheel was $120 and labor was 4 hrs at about $70 hr. When they do your flywheel they have to take the starter off anyway so you shouldn't be charged for the labor on that. So you should be only charged for around 4 hrs total.
