Coil Pack Question

So I have a misfire in cylinder 6, P0306 I think. I've narrowed it down to hopefully the coil pack. I just changed the spark plugs and wires, I checked the wires and the plug and they look OK. I smell gas whenever the car is on so I think that means there's gas. I don't know how to check if the cylinder isn't getting air so I just ruled it out. Is there anything I'm missing?

I want to buy the MSD #8224 coil, the question is can I just change one? Would that cause any problems, or should I change all of them at once? My other coil packs are stock I believe. I would change them all at once but I'm in a bit of a tight spot with my money. I just want my car to work again. Any input?

No reason to go with msd unless you are replacing all of them and have some considerable power mods. Just buy a new oem replacement and save yourself the cash.

I went to Summit and places like that and the OEM AC Delco ones are roughly the same price. $45 right?

Another question, what could cause the Check Engine Light to come on and off. This is the second time the light went out, my car isn't misfiring at all right now or if it is I can't feel it. It did this once before but then the misfire came back a day later.

if it flashes you have a misfire

if it comes on then goes away after a few days, it is an emissions problem

there are hundreds of causes for this to happen, so you will need to get it scanned.. which most places will do for free.

i would have to say the most common reasons are your gas cap, and any of your sensors (TPS, IAC, EGR) if they get a bad reading, it will shoot you a light.. once in a blue moon i will get a TPS light, but it goes away after it goes through the driving cycles

It will go off for a day and then be back on the next and stay on a week or so. I only drive the car about 2 minutes to campus 4 times a week.

hm, thats the only code that comes up?

thats normal for it to stay on for that amount of time from your driving habits, but your computer should store the codes unless you had the battery disconnected or something.

im not sure if they get deleted after a certain amount of time, but next time the light comes on, just get it scanned

it may just be rich conditions telling your o2 sensors something is wrong from the misfire

02 codes are common. try that first. but your misfiring problem is coil pack related. you could just change one if you know which one it is.

Changed the coil pack this afternoon. Before this the code had come back again. After changing the coil for cylinder 6 the Check Engine Light went away again but the car still had a slight stutter / shudder feeling under load (heavy acceleration, uphill driving). It would feel like the car is lurching and I'd hear some loud-ish banging noises.

Should I be looking at the pre-cat O2 sensors next?

was it misfiring before you changed plugs? you may have overtightened them and cracked the porcelain, which will cause a misfire under load.

No it wasn't. That could be a possibility, I had put off rechecking the plugs because I was at school but now that I'm back home for Thanksgiving I'll check it out.

So I'm an idiot, after a more thorough inspection of the spark plug wire now that I'm home I've noticed that there is a burn mark on the bottom of it; it was the wire causing the misfire the whole time. My header burnt through the boot protector and melted the insulation around the boot of the wire.

Is there any other kind of insulation I can put around the boot because the straight boot MSD wires pretty much rest on top of the header. Alternatively, where can I buy just one MSD spark plug wire, but with the 90* boot? I guess I would need one cut to the exact length of the one I have now going to cylinder 6. For now I taped it back up and turned the boot protector so I probably have a few more weeks of driving now.
