If you are trying to locate a whine, you should look into an automotive stethoscope. You can buy them at Autozone for a few bucks. They seriously help to locate noises ears alone can't pinpoint the problem.- Josh
If you have any questions or need installation pics/help, e-mail me: Viper98885@aol.com
\'93 Camaro Hardtop
\'01 Lincoln LS8 Sport
\'00 Yamaha YZF-R6
Full Throttle Performance

honestly, i have no clue whats going on with my car. my AC has been making noises, when i turned it on once, i made my volts drop and slowly go back up. once, while accelerating, i heard a weird noise. and now, i hear a whine and it gets not really louder but higher pitched going up the rpms. anyone want to throw out suggestions?

lets try to get the simtums in order....
1st, turned AC on a week or two ago and i went about a mile and started to here a pssssshh noise around the glove box area. turned AC off and it went away.
few days later, turned it on to see whats up and when i turned it on, the volts droped to the first red line from right above 13 and then slowly went up to just below 13. a mile later, i accelerated off a street light and i heard this vibration noise or maybe even a grinding noise but more of a vibration. let off gas, it stopped, and i turned off ac and it never happened again.
saturday, i turned on the car and drove it around town alittle with the ac off and i could hear this whinning. and it got higher pitched the higher up the rpms. yesterday, i turned on the car and popped the hood to try to find the nopise but couldnt hear it under the hood but i could easily hear it from inside sitting in the drivers seat.
then i turned on the AC and when i turned it to each ac button, it made a long pssssssssh noise. like 2 seconds long.
can anyone help me?

ne time u get noise like tat it is a sure sign of compressor failure, the ac will not engage with the unit off but the solenoid in the clutch can keep it locked as if it were on. the best thing u can do is hook up manifold gauges to the ac system and run it and see what they do, if u can rent or buy the gauge set with a site glass they are ideal.2004 srt4 few goodies
13.3 @ 103.4

I would also check the bearing on the pullies. I thought my AC was going bad because of the wine it was making but turned out to just be a bad bearing in ono of the pullies. Like said above a stethoscope would pin-point the problemWhite 98 Camaro with t-tops leather and Y87. For more info on mods just ask.
1/4=14.9
2002 Xterra V6 A4

well, you guys keep mentioning the compressor, so im like ok, it might be going, but i fel like you guys think the whine is the compressor and its not cause it whines with the ac off. so, i down to the pullies, alternator, and a vacumm line thats loose or off, but i dont know where the lines are at and my hanyes manual doesnt say. i need help. i've heard its like 800 to get the compressor fixed/replaced so im just going to delete it with a shorter belt and that will prevent the belt from being shreaded just in case even though i wont turn on th ac but im wondering, if i do that, will i be able to use my defroster in the winter? is there anyway i can go get my alternator tested? and where would i get my compressor tested? im still working on getting a stethoscope. probably after i come back from florida. (not taking mt car by the way)
