Sigh, well, I finally replaced the oil pump, along with another little spring loaded thing that came as part of the oil rebuild kit... no oil pressure after I started it. Any ideas?

i have no idea how the oiling system in the 3.8's work, but did you check to see if the pickup was in the right spot?
also, where/how did you install the mechanical gauge?
the only other thing i can think of is a clogged oil passage.. you may be able to use some ATF in your crankcase to try and clean any blockages out
it just seems hard to imagine that an oil passage can be blocked on a newer engine
What did the oil look like that came out when you changed it? Did you cut the old oil filter open to see if it was full of metal?
Yes, and it was clean. I found no metal flakes in it to speak of. When I threw a rod on my 88 Trans Am's engine I found plenty of metal flake, so I have a at least descent idea as to what I am looking for. I also played with it with a magnet and didn't get anything. When the oil came out it looked basically as it should... I had changed it less then 500 miles before the failure.

I installed the mechanical gauge in place of stock electric gauge sender. I didn't look at the pickup, you don't need to take the oil pan off to replace the oil pump, and I was avoiding removing the oil pan the best I could, but it looks like that may be next. Honestly I am left with the screen got completely plugged, or something is blocked. The ATF idea is good, any idea how much I should ad? I only worry since nothing is flowing I won't really get any circulation to clean out whatever is stuck..
I don't think the pickup would fall off ,its bolted on ,not like a pressed pickup on a 3.4. Did you prime the pump? load it with grease? maybe try a shop vac to suck oil through? good luck
My only hope is that the pickup screen was plugged by something. Nothing anywhere mentions any sort of priming, I own the Chiltons for the car. I put some clean oil on the pump parts before I installed them, like it said. I also put some oil in the filter, twice, but it didn't seem to help.
Just an update on this old old thread. The oil pan got pulled off and it was completely full of sludge that was blocking the pickup. Cleaned up and put back together and it has been running great ever since. Now, to track down where the missing coolant is going...

I had the exact same thing going on with my 97 camaro this past summer. Started it up and it said zero oil pressure. Went to replace the oil pump and found BAD sludge. Cleaned it all up on the front plate, did not install a new pump, just primed it after a thorough cleaning, put it all back together and it was fine. As instructed by a mechanic friend I ran some crank case cleaner through and then drained & replaced the oil again. That was this past summer and I have not seen that problem again. I got lucky. Oh and the only reason I did not replace the pump is we had a good feeling the sludge was blocking the pickup and it was.

There is many fun places for the coolant to go on a 3.8!!! Lower intake manifold gaskets are a common culprit. Have you checked to oil and coolant to verify no mixing of fluids? If there is no mixing, the first thing I would look at is the L shaped elbow from the front of the lower intake manifold to the water pump. It's a little plastic elbow that is very brittle. Check hoses for any signs of leaking, if not, find a pressure tester. Unless it's a headgasket, it should be pretty cheap and easy to fix.
I am going to take a VERY close look at the oil to see if I can see any signs of it mixing. However, I am leaning towards that little plastic elbow as most of the oil has appeared clean so far. Not ruling anything out at this point.
Was this engine neglected? Just wondering how that much sludge builds up if the car had regular oil changes, occasional engine flush, etc? Is it high milage?
Regular oil changes where probably neglected on the car I am guessing. The rest of the car is in great shape. Mileage is only 78k, I think the problem developed at about 75k.
