You'll need a laptop computer too. Its not a hand-held tuner, its a computer program and data cable.

HPT does everything. Search their website for details.

I dont suggest getting the program just to adjust for a t-stat though. Send in your PCM to pcmforless.com or Texas Speed and have it tuned for that. But its worth every penny to have HPT if you are going to do nitrous, turbo/supercharger, cam swap etc.

you dont have to tune your car to run a 160 thermo, you guys are crazy.

Well, I would think that you have to let the computer know that it's supposed to be running cooler. Otherwise it may think the car is never getting warmed up, and would keep running rich. With a 180 stat I could see getting away w/o tuning, but 160 seems pretty cool.

However, take my advice for what it's worth because I've never done this mod, I've just read about it :)

With 160* your car will operate at 165* temp. most of the time and prolong driving will bring it up to 180-190*. If you get stuck on a heavy traffic your temp will still go up to 210* and your fan will kick in.

When you replace the gasket though be sure the surface is nice and clean and smooth. Otherwise you'll experience coolant leak.
That is true, I run a drilled 160 thermo and fans reprogramed with hptuners. If I drive in traffic It will still heat up to 210 degrees or some where around there, this is when it is 115 degrees outside. In winter like now , never goes over 180 degrees.

The max temp is dependent on our radiators and their capacity to lower the temperature of the coolant. I'm not even gonna explain what our thermostats do because I hope we all know. But letting the PCM know wtf is going on is a good idea. No, you do not have to tune your car after you install a 160 thermostat. But what's the point in not having your fans kick on sooner if your end goal is to make the car run cooler?

but if i ran a 160 degree thermostat without getting it tuned, and ran a manual fanswitch, wouldnt that be the same thing as getting it tuned except i would be in control of when the fan turns on and off, not my pcm?

You could do that, fan switch when done properly would be great esp. if you have a low and high setup where you could control them both when needed.

No problem, I saw Robert's( FirebirdGT) Firebird with his fan switches. Looked great, he had the high and low setup (if I remember correctly) , the install was great , looked like it belonged there. I think he did a writeup on doing the switches.
