• Coolant Fill Question...

In the owners manual it says fill to the the full cold mark with a 50/50 mixture of drinkable water and Dex Coolant. Does that mean up to here on the dipstick?

P.S. I filled it before i read this and filled it up pretty much all the way, is this bad? oh yea and it was all regular coolant too :(

Regular, as in the green Non dex-cool=bad news. I hope that is not what you mean. You need to use the Orange dex-cool.

yes you definatly do not want to mix green with orange coolant. And you dont want to overfill the coolant because when it gets hot it will bubble up and blow out of your resivore. Make a big mess. I would suggest taking your car down to Jiffy Lube and having them flush and fill the coolant with dex cool. This way you know that all the green is flushed out and only the good dex cool is in there. Cost about $49 is all.

You could buy a bottle of radiator flush from your auto parts store for like $2.79. I did mine yesterday, and it really cleaned out my system well. It takes a bit of time just to allow the engine to cool down between steps, but will save you like $40 or so. The previous owner of this car had mixed orange and green coolant at some time in the past, and made an ugly sludge inside the radiator. If you are running the green stuff, dump it quick, use a flush liquid, and refill with Dexcool orange coolant at about a 50/50 ratio with water.

if you used the green stuff, just drain it out and replace with the correct mixture of dex-cool and you will be fine

Flush it a few times to make sure ALL of the green coolant is out, then fill it with the orange coolant mixture.

It's something about the silocone in it, or not in it that is not made for the radiator or the engine. Most GM cars especially the mid to high performance ones have to have Dex or it can cause cooling problems, fo real.

Crap- I flushed my coolant a month or so ago and put in the green stuff. Didnt know it was bad for it, car runs awesomely cool. Much better than it did with dex in it. =/ I guess I gotta go flush it.

There is NOTHING wrong with running green coolant in your ride!

You just CAN'T mix the two!(green and orange coolants)

quote:
Most GM cars especially the mid to high performance ones have to have Dex or it can cause cooling problems, fo real.

Not true.

???Has anyone had prolonged use with either, I mean that saying has anyone had either a long term good showing or bad showing with either of the coolants. I'm sure that GM had or has a good reason for choosing the DEX-cool over the others, at first I thought that it was GM endorsed or something, and that would serve a purpose for making everyone buy "their" coolant but unless I'm mistaken, it's not. Has ANYONE had their car for a while with or without problems in this area so I can stop thinking about it, short term opinions scare me like clones or something...sounds good now but it may kill your azz later. My car is 8 years old (1995 3.8) with about 86,000 miles. It has used nothing but Dex-Cool with no problems. It runs cool as a cucumber. In fact, last time it was flushed, the old stuff coming out looked as clean as the new stuff going in the car!

Either coolant is o.k...just don't mix the two.
