  • Oil Pressure Sending Unit - Failure

    1993 Firebird 3.4L

I was driving home from work yesterday afternoon (5 mile commute). I was stopped at a light and I smelled oil burning. Sure enough I looked at the pressure gauge and the oil pressure was about 25 psi. My car always runs at about 40-55 psi. I pulled over into a gas station to check it out. It was clear that the sending unit blew out and the oil was spraying out the back of the unit where the wiring plug goes in. The oil level was down about 3/4 of a quart.

So I filled the oil and drove it home nice and easy. When I got home it was down 1/2 of a quart.

Sending unit was very easy to remove from the top. I went to Advance Auto and bought a new one ($25). When I returned home it was very easy to install it, again from the top. I also bought a can of engine degreaser to clean up the mess all over the left side of the engine bay.

Luckily this happened close to home so it was not a really big deal. New sending unit is working fine, pressure reads 40 at idle and about 55-60 under a load.

40 psi at idle? pretty good. My '94 3.4 levels out at about 20psi at idle(starts at about 60) after changing the leaking sending unit. Before I changed it, I would get 0 pressure at a hot idle from 20 at start up.

Yeah, this car has very good oil pressure. I run 10w30 oil in it. It has always been 60 psi at start up and 40 psi at idle. On a very hot day it will drop to about 35 at idle, but still very decent oil pressure.

so it's basically a plug that just screws into the pan right? just use a crescent wrench to get it off and put the new one back on?

I just replaced my oil level sensor, it was leaking where the wire plugs in. But oil pressure sensors do the same thing leak from the plug wire.

The pressure sensor screws into the oil filter housing. The oil level sensor screws into the pan. Either way both are very easy to access and replace. A crescent wrench would certainly do the trick.
