  • Why use Orange coolant ? help.

    LoL, I was reading the post on coolant just a sec ago and I figured Id post my own, I used green coolant -non dex I guess when I flushed my radiator. Mixed with Red line water wetter and distilled water. Whats the problem with using Green only as apposed to orange dex. the car runs cool, right at 195 where the thermostat is set? is it a long term thing. I know ur not supposed to mix orange and green cause it causes sludge- Do I have to flush out the green or is it just recomended to use green.

    Dex-cool is good for about 100k miles...also it prevents rust, and deposits much better than the green stuff. Pro longed use of a non dex cool antifreeze is not good.

      depends on who you talk to

      some say dexcool is great

      others say it sucks

      I would never run dexcool for 100k miles though. That's asking for trouble. A local ASE certified master tech has seen several cars with sludged cooling systems due to following that recommendation.

      you are likely fine running the green stuff.

        dexcool is not good for 100K Miles no matter what they say.

        There is nothing inherantly wrong with the green over the orange. The problem arises when you mix the two.

        If you go from orange to green you must be VERY sure all the orange has been flushed out. Several full flushes with water should eliminate all traces of it. Then you can run green no problemo [img]smile.gif[/img] Green actually lasts longer too.

        I run dexcool but Im always fiddling with my coolant 2x a year, so I never have a problem with it.

          U can mix the orange and green, no biggie.

          The Orange stuff is silicate free and has longer change intervals. That's the big difference. Although, I could've sworn that I've seen silicate free green stuff.

          Silicates in the coolant wear out the water pump bearing prematurely. But it's not big deal, still should last a long while. So, if u choose the green stuff, go for the silicate free one.

          When I pull the coolant dipstick, I see dried up coolant. But it's only dried up on the dry part of the stick. The wet part still looks good and not gunky at all. Nonetheless, I would change it sooner than the recommended time from the factory. Same with plugs. Same with oil changes.

          They all have rust inhibitors, so......

              Wrong. By mixing the two, you are creating a chemical reaction that can cause SEVERE problems with the cooling system - from the radiator to the block and back.

              Dex-cool is suppose to be this "wonder" anti-freeze/coolant. Silicate free, longer intervals between coolant changes, blah, blah, blah.

              You encounter problems when the Dex-cool (cooling system) is exposed to air. The additives in the coolant begin to coagulate, clogging the passages in the system. (trust me, I've seen it) [img]graemlins/crybaby.gif[/img]

              If you're running green, you're okay. You'll just have to maintain it more often (i.e., shorter intervals between changing the coolant).

              If I was someone currently running Dex-cool... I'd change it now (or as soon as the warranty runs out). Have the radiator and block throughly flushed (generally with an acid wash). Then replace the coolant with green.

              Save yourself the trouble, Dex-cool is NOT the "wonder" anti-freeze/coolant. It's actually junk. [img]graemlins/thumbsup.gif[/img]

                As I posted in the other thread. I flushed my System when I replaced my Water pump at 50,000 miles. I flushed OUT the orange, and filled up with Green. I've always run green, with no problems. Dex may have a longer change interval, but I usually flush my system once a year, so its no biggie.

                  I believe the green stuff cools better.. I run the green stuff..

                  70/30 coolant/distilled water mixture.

                    Well, the manufacturer states that it's ok to mix the two.

                    I myself wonder about this gunking up thing when I pulled up my dipstick. But when I changed my rear main seal, all the coolant came out and it looked just fine. It was at around 75k on stock coolant. There was nothing on my radiator cap.

                    I had no probs with the orange stuff. But I would definitely change it sooner than the recommended interval.

                            Try discerning foreign rust-particles in an orange-colored median.

                            I only use the green stuff, and NO, you cannot mix the two. It'll turn almost caustic, and begin degrading your cooling system.

                              I read it on the Orange bottle a few years ago. It also states that its OK to mix it on Texaco's, Prestone's, and other sites. Read the link below.

                              But, I still wouldn't mix it. Why? Because it will bring it "down" to conventional coolant intervals and longevity. Also because of the resultant color.
