  • Anyone with a 98+ camaro step in plz

    Hello!

My oldest brother is interested in this 99 red t-tops camaro to buy. He just got a job, and hes fresh out of college, but he needs a car. It has 43XXX miles and was the owner of the dealerships wife's car. Very clean, exterior and interior. I just had a couple of questions for you guys.

#1 It idles at like 600-700 rpm, is this normal? My car idles at 900. I let it warm up also, and it still does that. Just seems low to me?

#2 The temperature gets to 200 DRIVING, is this too hot? Once again, my car never gets past 170, but I have the 180 thermo stat, new water pump.

I don't see any oil leaks around the seals or anything, other then those two probs., its perfect.

Anything else I should look for? The guy who is selling it told us he'll fix any problems we find before we buy it, b/c the right rear taillight has a crack, I noticed it because it had water in it. He's going to fix that ( buy a new one? not sure )

Just let me know guys, I apprecaite it!

I already checked rear window defrost, all the interior buttons/radio/speakers/ carpet and stuff, the paint on the body is great, it doesn't pull to any side when braking/driving, the ac is cold, can't think of anything else off the top of my head! Thanks guys!

Regarding #s 1 & 2: sounds pretty normal to me. Assuming the Camaro is a V6, the factory thermostat is 195 degrees, so 200 is actually a little low. 210 would not be unusual for factory.

The F-body tachs are noteable inaccurate. If the idle is smooth probably nothing to be concerned about. If it is not, maybe some carbon build up and needs cleaning. Don't forget to have the idle air valve cleaned.

I dont know where my temp sits at, all I know is that it usually stops at the first 1/4 mark, I have never seen the 210 or above in mine.

about the idel, the 3.8 seems to idel pretty low, and it is pretty quiet when running, I dont think that is a problem.

I would run out and look at the temp thing more but it is 9*

Always take a new car on the highway before buying it. When I first bought my 98 I did this and found that the tranny messed up at high speeds.

my 98 idles at 900, so 6-700 is a bit low, but if it's smooth i wouldn't obsess over it. just mention it to the owner and ask him to check it out.

thermostat + coolant mix being too thick with dexcool causes the temp issue.

Its probably idling fine if it sounds smooth and normal.

I like the 00+'s personally, better steering wheels :D

Sounds normal to me. Mine idles at 700 rpms unless the ac compressor is on, then it idles at 750 rpms. The temp sounds normal too. The needle on mine is always a couple of millimeters left of the center vertical line.

If it is an A4, idling in gear at 6-700 RPM is typical and 200 is a normal on the 2000.
