is your car in park whenever you are trying to start it? The car has to be in park on an auto in order to start<a href=\"http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/512325\" target=\"_blank\">2004 Silver Impala</a> Faster than my Firebird<br /><br /><a href=\"http://www.cardomain.com/member_pages/view_page.pl?page_id=282862\" target=\"_blank\">3.4L Red 1995 Pontiac Firebird</a><b> For Sale</b>

Stupid question, but you're pushing the brake in when you try to get it out of park, right? If so, check to make sure the brake lights are actually coming on. I think there's some kind of sensor that will detect if the brakes are depressed before letting you move the stick out of park...1997 Y87 Camaro with a motor and some stuff.

I had the same exact problem on my 95...
As far as the difficulty shifting out of park it is caused by a bad shift accutator.
The key is locked in the ignition becuase it may seem like your in park but your not. Put the shifter in park and release the brake, now check to make sure the knob on the shifter is hard and will not depress. It shouldn't depress unless you have your foot on the brake pedal. So if it depresses move the shifter around until the knob clicks and becomes hard to depress.
Once again this is all caused by the shift accutator (pretty cheap to fix)
