  • 3.4L stumbles under load

I have been having an issue with my 3.4L swap. When I am cruising on the highway, and I come to a hill I will push the gas pedal down more to continue at the same rate of speed, but pushing the pedal down does not seem to add any more power, so once the pedal is pushed down to the floor if I let off a little bit, it feels like I released the emergency brake and the vehicle lurches forward, so I am wondering what would cause that? To me it feels like it is running rich and is stumbling. I have a supercharged maxima that acted this way before I got it tuned. As far as I can tell I am getting pretty bad gas mileage though i am not sure what I should be getting since the 3.4 is not in a camaro. Also when I floor it I blow smoke out of the tail pipe which leads me to believe it is running rich. THe idle is pretty smooth. My O2 sensors are new, and my check engine light is not on. I have check my injectors with noid lights so I know they are all getting power, but out side of that I have not check the resistance (what should the resistance be?). Could it be an injector is stuck open? MAP sensor? Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any help.

maybe coil packs. coil packs are often find at idle/low rpms, but when you get on the pedal they can cause a misfire.

Is there any way to test (multi meter) to figure out which one is failing? If that is the case?

Also when the engine is cold it will happen more defined....it will shutter much harder. Does that point towards anything?

        coil pack i'd say.

heres how you can test if you wanna do it the cheapo way.

        1. buy a brand new replacement coil pack.

        2. replace any one of your existing coil packs 1 at a time until the misfire goes away. If it keeps happening after you've tried all 3 packs, either you have more than one bad coil pack (unlikely) or the problem lies elsewhere.

at least you didnt waste all your money!

is there an actual way to test them with a multi meter? I have 3 used coil packs, and I would rather use those as opposed to what you suggested but I would rather know the coil pack is good before I use it, or else be able to pin point the one that is bad.

            how many miles?

has the fuel filter been changed? if not, do so. its cheap and not hard.

seafoam wouldnt be a bad idea, and also only a few bucks.

if the check engine light is off, i dont think its the coil packs. that and the fact that it only does it under a heavy load from what your telling us.

first off the ses light doesn't have to be on if the coil packs are bad.

secondly a coil pack is not a broken/not broken easy to look at deal. Some coil packs ONLY go bad in the higher rpms while keeping perfectly fine down low.

don't take my word as gospel, i'm just lettin ya know.

and if the car is misfiring under heavy load youd have to test the coil packs under load if that makes sense which is probably hard to do.

i'd buy a new one or find one used that is in working cond. and test them out one at a time.

my 3.4 does the same thing! its been bothering me for some time now and mine also give a large pop like a back fire when i get on it real hard from a stop i replaced my coil packs and did a tune up and nothing improved i also herd that my intake might be leaking ?

                  Re: 3.4L stumbles under load

yes intake/vaccum leak would cause a high idle.

i still dont think its the coil packs, and im aware on the ses light, if the misfire isnt occuring at a certain rate, it wont come on.

again, miles will help, along with a list of whats already been replaced, and as much info on the problem as possible.

Okay so now my check engine light is coming on while driving for random periods of time, then going off (i.e. it would be lit up for 5 minutes then go off for 2 minutes, then come back on for 1 minute then go back off). What would cause that? I need to get a scanner, but I have not had the $$ recently for one. I am used to the CEL staying on in my other cars until the code is cleared.

What code reader do you guys recomend to scan these ecm's (1.5 obd)? I want a scanner that will scan these, and my 1992 maxima, and my newer ODBII stuff.

Check fuel pressure low pressure will make it dump fuel ie run rich then it bumps the idle because of stumble from being so rich
fuel pump is a real possibility

Cam/Crank positioning sensors cause the on and off check engine light on my 94

I can check that but the fuel pump is brand new.

Hopefully I can check that soon. I need to be able to read the codes but I don't have the extra money right now.

Cool you said its not in a camaro right are you sure the fuel pump is designed to produce the proper pressure for the 3.4
