When i started my car today it started to idle at over 2000rpms, it starts out normal but then it slowly creeps up to that over about 30 sec. i thought there might be a loose sensor or something and when i fooled around with the connections on the throttle body it slowed down a bit , but went right back up, i couldnt determine what sensor did it, and couldnt replicate it again. any ideas??

Re: Car started to idle high??
Just guessing here, but it very well could be the IAC (Idle Air Control) Valve.
When they get dirty, they screw with the idle something-fierce!

Re: Car started to idle high??
As a '96 3.8L M5 owner here and I only have very high idle where the tach needle jumps and hovers between 1500 to 1800 RPM when:
A - It's very cold outside and the ambient temp is below 32* F or 0* C
B - Your'e on the road within 10 seconds without warming the car up on very cold days and you reach the high idle when at your first streetlight.
Every winter it happens to me so I just disconnect the battery overnight and the problem goes away but not technically gone forever. PCM related or IAC valve replacement. You mentioned an SES light. Get it scanned for free at Autozone and find someone not so busy to help you out.
Autozone Duralast IAC valve for $32. Part # AC 135
Napa Auto Parts IAC valve is $44. Part # 2-19203

your post makes me believe you thought your car had a problem, that is 100% normal
OBDI cars do it for even longer

Re: Car started to idle high??
unless you have been screwing with some vacum lines or been around the manifold messing around with stuff i doubt a line is just going to pop off. Also like hockeyman said could be the IAC but honestly the colder it is the higher your cars gona idle as long as the idle drops down to normal range when the car is warmed up you should be fine man.
