Re: crazy missfire issue, has two mechanics stumped!
I would think that the MAF would throw a code...and as for the car only running bad in third gear, its not only in third that it missfires, it just usually when its the worst. And I forgot to mention that when I shift gears and let off the gas sometimes the car backfires really loudly a few times, actually sounds kinda cool when it happens when I shift gears :) its not an extemely loud and bad backfire it just kinda pops like popcorn...
Re: crazy missfire issue, has two mechanics stumped!
You might have a bad ground, only reason I mention this is you mention other electrical gremlins and a relation to engine temp and moisture. If your battery has top AND side posts you could run a temp wire from a top post to the ground location on the side of the engine and see if that helps.

Re: crazy missfire issue, has two mechanics stumped!
Wow the car just took a real bad turn for the worse, whenever I started from a redlight today I put the gas pedal down maybe 10% and car took off like a rocket and started jerking uncontrollably and when I got it to stop it almost cut off. 10 seconds later the car is running fine other than the normal miss here and there. I tried running a ground wire from the negative to the ground location closest to the battery and the car ran the same. I see 3 other ground locations under the hood I still have to try. I forgot to mention after it took off and started jerking uncontrollably I heard a like a clicking sound coming from under the hood kind of like a solenoid clicking or something really fast, then it went away after I got my car to cruising speed.
Re: crazy missfire issue, has two mechanics stumped!
i did not read the posts well,,,,but my guess would be, first the TPS, and my second guess would be,WATER SIPPING IN THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER VIA THE INTAKE OR A SMALL BLOWN HEAD GASKET. or also THE PLUG HEAT RANGE TO HIGH AND ITS PREDETONATING AND THE KNOCK SENSOR GOES CRAZY. OR YOUR STATE GOT BAD FUEL WHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Re: crazy missfire issue, has two mechanics stumped!
ya know, this sounds like a prob i had early last year- ended up i had some oil probs. changed some gastkets (which got the pressure back up) and everything ran normal again. i changed the upper intake gasket, and while i was doing that, i went ahead and changed the valve cover gaskets too, while the upper intake was off and it would be easier to do lol also look at your radiator the bottom right (passenger side) there is a place for an oil line. when i replaced my radiator all i had was two screwdrivers and an adjustable wrentch, that means that oil line wasnt as snug as it should be and vibrated loose. check your oil and see if there is water in it. open the oil cap and see if there is any kinda white/yellow foam. your car is doing the same thing mine was
Re: crazy missfire issue, has two mechanics stumped!
Check your knock sensor or both depending on which engine you have 3.8=100k 3.4=3.5 to 4.5K a faulty knock sensor will cause the computer to retard timing. You say your getting codes ,which ones?
Re: crazy missfire issue, has two mechanics stumped!
i had the same... check ur egr valve and ur knock sensor... with a bad knock sensor it could be causing a misfire and retarding the timing... there are quite a few sensors that could go bad and cause misfire like that... is it only under a load or anytime. i found out my timing retarded only while my car was under a load. u can lightly break torque it to find this out.
Re: crazy missfire issue, has two mechanics stumped!
Changed the crank sensor and fuel filter and car still runs like crap. It misses under load and while cruising. My oil cap did have some yellow foam stuff underneath it when I checked it.
Re: crazy missfire issue, has two mechanics stumped!
hey pull your plugs. Sounds like you may have a blown head gasket or intake gasket. I was having the same problem, minus the codes. My car has been parked since, but it sounds like you may have some coolant on the plugs. Pull them and check them out. If they are wet, they will not spark

Hello, so I changed the front bearings on the bird and the ABS inoperative light came on. I made a mistake of not removing negative battery cable. Now...
I usually have to double, triple my headlight switch for them to come up on my 97 Firebird. I cleaned all connections. Could it be the headlight switch...
