Re: why are 3.8 camaros so heavy?

i wouldn't say they are that heavy, sure they are heavy cars when you compare them to a Miata. but the engine is an iron block/heads that's where most of the weight comes from

    Abbott long tubes,homemade true duals,slp ram air,whisper lid,eibach springs,kyb shocks,BMR subframe connectors, BMR LCA reloc brackets,BMR LCAs. T-top/manual converted

because it is a car, and has a **** load of metal on it, which IIRC weighs a lot

                    well done mrhobbz...well done sir.

ava1219 are you looking to lower your race weight for track or just want clarification on why are cars weigh what they do? try removing your spare and jack, rear seats, any extra carpeting you can, or extra audio equipment if weight reduction is your main goal (a good start at least).

although our beloved f-bodies aren't the trimmest girls on the block, they could be worse like some of today's new 2-ton tire melters like the challenger SRT8. Even after Hennessey totally revamped the SRT8 and even force-fed it with a HPSH single turbo making over 600hp/tq, it still only has stock corvette c6 performance (400-436hp) because of all that weight it's having to launch. try having a guy with 200 less hp and half the money invested own you...that's a car in need of a diet.

What is it, 100lbs = 1/10th of a second? What are you trying to achieve here? You can probably shed 300ish I'd imagine pulling the carpet, passenger seats and interior panels out.

I meant outside shell body parts like the fenders, bumpers, and hood and such...every car needs a frame and floor boards and an engine...you pretty much got to swallow those weights...

not likely...go on the Bfranker website and look at the weights of everything there...it is hard to shed 150 lbs just taking out the interior and spare and jack....

on a side note...what is the GVWR in our cars mean? someone keeps telling me it is the cars weight...I can't see that as being possible...mine says 4100 lbs and I have the bases of all models...no t-tops, no power windows, no power door locks...no options really at all...I should have one of the lightest v6 camaros in stock form I think...

I think I have shed well over 300lbs , with a tub. K , tub. lower/upper A Arms, QA-1 front shocks& springs, Chromally rear control arms, panhard rod, front bumper support removed, tire/jack, back seats rermoved, lighter weight carpet put in, front seats replaced with lighter ones, fiberglass hood and rear spoiler, ALM. driveshaft, panhard upper peice removed, windsheild res. removed, cruise control, EGR, EVAP removed, also tunnel mount TQ arm removed everything on the tail of the tranny, RK sport headers, heat sheilds, all plastic under the front end removed, will be putting BAtt. in the rear and taking out stock coolant res. and putting in a ALM. 1QT. one. For the track have front Prostars that weigh 30lbs with tires. Also can drop my 35mm ST front sway bar for the track 35lbs and remove 25lb or so pass. seat and sub and amp about 50lbs from the rear. But will be adding about 100lbs in turbo stuff, so it all works out in the end.

That is what I thought...then there is another number like 760-830 something like that, that says do not load more then this combined weight in the car...do you take your GVWR and subtract that 760-830 number to get your vehicle weight? approx...
