  • my car is making me angry

i keep having random problems that will completely go away, but i would like to find out what they are

driving home just 5 min ago, shift into 3rd gear, then a few seconds later my car just starts shaking, i can see my shifter vibrating like crazy, let off the fuel, it stopped and i have not been able to replicate it

no SES, but it felt drivetrain/engine related

i dont think it was a misfire either, if it was, then all of the plugs were misfiring at the same time, but i didnt really feel any power loss

any ideas? it felt almost like really bad clutch chatter, except i was already in 3rd gear for a few seconds, and the rpms didnt do anything

any ideas? im not too worried, but i would like to see if anyone has had something similar..

Re: my car is making me angry

I had a similar problem in one of my older cars, a 1976 Trans Am.

1st gear began to chatter real bad. I tore it apart months later and found that the pilot bearing was worn out, which caused the input shaft sleeve to vibrate and snap, then the vibration broke my trans mount. Believe it or not, all of those parts ran me about $75 total, but getting to them...well...was a PITA! The trans had to be dropped, so I installed a new clutch upon reassembly with all of the new parts.

I'm not saying this is definitely your problem, but it may give you some insight of what may be.

i thought about that, but it seemed almost exactly like clutch chatter, or me accidentally putting it in 5th gear when going 15mph, like engine wise

i tried to reproduce the problem, and i even shifted from 2nd to 5th thinking i accidentally did that, but it just wasnt the same

it may be the trans mount, because i remember with the other 2 i broke, i would get a lot of drivetrain vibration when starting out (once again, almost like clutch chatter) but never in another gear while already moving.. its just weird that it only happened one time for ~5 seconds then totally quit

thats very interesting, did it vibrate all of the time, or just sometimes? my pilot bearing is only 6 months old

pull your old one out.. measure it with a caliper make a spacer accordingly (so your angle stays the same) and throw it with the new one back in

It would vibrate about 1 out of every 10 times. Funny thing was, the clutch was replaced just before I bought it, and the prior owner said the pilot bearing was only a few hundred miles old. Maybe he installed it inproperly because it fell out when I pulled the trans off of the engine. The center was worn out...bigtime! It looked like Amy Reids bunghole!
