• The solution to the squeek

I'm gettin a weird squeeky noise from the im assuming the wheel area. Its only when im driving and i cant stick my head out by the wheel so im not positive. It sounds like it has to do with spinning, and is more aggresive on turns sometimes.

    Is it the brakes?

    Or maybe something else?

    Front or back?

Front- Warped rotors, worn brake pads, loose caliper bolt(s), worn out wheel bearings, LOOSE LUG NUTS, tie rod ends worn, ball joints worn, etc.

Back- Warped rotors, lug nuts loose, caliper bolts loose, axle bent, worn out axle bearing, brake pads low, etc.

For me, getting a new tie-rod end got rid of some nasty front-end squeak. My car is dead silent now - wonder how I lived with it!

wierd sqeuky noise driving down the road...

any chance its coming from the hatch or spare tire?

if you suspect spare tire, put rags in all the contact points of the tire and teh metal part of the car, the vibration of the car will make the rubber sqeuk at times.

IF you think the hatch, adjust the rubber screws on the hatch.

Both very common causes of squeks in the back of f-bodies

I've got the same problem...only seems to become apparent when I'm turning the wheel, and the noise goes away when I hit the brakes

Firebird: My problem exactly - the new tie rod end cleared it up. Easy way to test for that is to take off your wheel, grab the rotor and move it back and forth laterally. If it has a serious amount of play in the tie rod, you'll feel and see it. They're easy to replace but require an alignment afterwards.

I had it done at a shop. You can do it yourself fairly easily - just be sure to mark off where the end of the tie rod end is on the tie rod so that when you screw it on, your toe will not be completely off kilter. Be sure to check whether it's the inner or outer tie-rod end, they're sold seperately (at least, according to the advance auto parts website).

AAP has a great writeup on how to diagnose and repair and what you'll need here:

                  http://www.advanceautoparts.com/howt...20021001tr.htm

you could also probably find it in your Hayne's or Chilton's manual.

Remember to get an alignment done right afterwards - front wheel alignments run anywhere from $40-$60. You can get it fairly close, but even a little out of whack will become problems in the future.
