  • Starting Issue!!!

Ok it started out a few days ago my car started to not start on the first try it would try but it acted like there wasn't enough juice to get it started. So I took my battery to get it checked. It came back A OK so I put it back in and it started right up. I left my car parked over night went out to start it the next day wouldn't start. Moved on to the alternator it is fine also. It starts fine if you put a jump on it. My security light is on and so is the service engine soon also when you turn the key on like your trying to start it the check gauges light is on. All the gauges look normal but my battery one is low and kinda surges when you turn the key. I was thinking a short somewhere? If anyone else has any other thoughts please let me know. If you think it's a short to please let me know where you would start. Thank you Chris.

    Re: Starting Issue!!!

Something like this happened to me a few weeks ago. It turned out that the security wires that hit the chip on the key were broken and the key cylinder had to be replaced and new keys made for it.

How much did that cost you if you don't mind me asking? Has anyone else had this problem or any other ideas?

those lights should be on when your key is on, thats completely normal

but when you do get it started, they turn off, correct?

try cleaning the terminals on the battery and the battery cables, they may be dirty and not giving you a god enough connection

Also why would the security system allow my car to start under a jump but not under its own power? Did your car do that as well?

No the security one stays on and so does the service one.... they have both been on for a while. I checked the battery connection the other day and it was a little bad but i cleaned up and the problem still came up. I just jumped started my car I am letting it run for a while and I am going to shut it off and see if it start again under its own power.

If you can jump start it then your problem is not the same as the one I had. Mine wouldn't start at all from the key and when you went down to the starter itself to start it, it would only run for about 3 seconds and shut off.

The cost for my repair by the way was about $350.

I know this probably sounds funny but if I have a bad headlight that wouldn't cause my problem would it? It's been out for a couple days now every time I replace it the other one burns out a few weeks later. I'm not sure if it is a coincidence or if it's a short somewhere.

well, you first need to find out why it is burning out, there could be water leaking on it, or something, but i dont see the bulb would do that.. unless something else is drawing power off of your battery and giving your bulb too much voltage

that sounds like a bad battery

just because the tester said it was fine means nothing, those things are junk anyways.. how old is this battery?

even though its not 100% accurate, what does your volt gauge say when its running? a surging volt gauge like you described really sounds like the battery is too weak and can hardly turn the engine over

oh ok, yeah having the security light on means there is a problem with the VATS, it can either be related to the resistor reading, or your BCM.. only way to find out without spending a whole bunch of money is fine out what resistance your key is, going to radio shack and buying the resistor, and sticking it in the wires that read the key, if the light goes out, you know that was the problem if it stays on, its your BCM

Ok so how is my key Running my battery low I don't get it I guess. Is it because there is a short there? The security light has been on for over a year I would say and the problem just popped up in the last week.

Also if it is the BCM wouldn't it not start all the time?

its not your key that is running it low, there may be something that is drawing current that is connected to the bulb, which is why it keeps blowing out

i still think new battery will fix your problem with the starting (it could be a bunch of things that is causing the bulb to keep burning out)

your car is always using the battery, even after you shut it off, and 3 months of sitting, it is still using the battery.

im not saying your problem is that something is using it excessively.. i think you just have a bad battery.

i would replace it, and go from there.. how old is the battery in there now? it might need to be changed anyways

the fact that the car starts whn you get a jump means the battery is dead.. whether it is going dead because it is bad, or because something is drawing a current off of it, i have no idea, and you are gonna need to get a voltmeter
