• MSD DIS-4 install help

I have a 2001 Firebird and purchased the MSD DIS-4, MSD blaster coils, and MSD CIM's for it. About a week ago I dropped it off at a local performance shop to have all of it installed. Well, the install went pretty smoothly, but the mechanic has had it for the past 4 days becuase he is saying that he has to hook the car up to a computer in order to tune the MSD ignition to the car's factory settings. Only problem is his computer at his shop is down and he is waiting on another shop to bring their computer by so he can tune it, but they keep flaking on him. I wasn't aware the MSD had to be tuned to factory settings with a computer. Is the mechanic being overly cautious or is this valid? I didn't get a chance to read the manual all the way througH for the MSD, but I am pretty sure I should be able to tune everything from the box itself without a computer. Can't I? I really want my firebird back. I've been having to drive my third gen all week (don't get me wrong, I like it, but the 4th gen is much more fun to drive ) and I don't want to have to drive it any more if it isn't neccessary. Any help would be much appreciated.

Before you post , try to look at the Modifications Encyclopedia first. That’s why it does exist.

p.s. Sounds like to me.
DIS4 is Multi spark system and its based on internal ignition system. What kind of tune he wants to do???

He says he has to tune the ignition system to factory settings. I forgot to mention in my post that it is the MSD DIS-4 Plus. I'm not sure if that makes a difference in whether or not it has to be tuned to factory settings first. Because the the MSD install in the Modifications Encyclopedia is just the MSD DIS-4 and it has switches instead of knobs to tune the MSD box.

Also, how much has everyone paid to have it installed?

Just finished my dis 4 plus install took like 2 hours to wire to include double cheking and 1 and a half hours for the install as for tuning it he is full of it. No tuning needed.

He says in order to get the most out of the MSD DIS-4 it's best to set it to factory settings and then tune it from there. All I know is that this guy has really crappy service adn I won't be going back to him ever again. He has not called me once to inform me about what's going on. I am the one who always intiates communication. He said he could get this job done in 3 hours and now he's had my car for 2 weeks. This sucks.

Two weeks! He definately doesn't know what he is doing probably still trying to figure out the instuctions. Cause there is no tuning to be done set the first dial to 1 and thats it the rest are rev limiters and retard settings if you don't hook up the small pink wire you dont use those at all.

I told him yesterday that I would no longer require his services after he once again missed a self-imposed deadline. He said it would be ready by 1 on Friday and when I called him at 12:30pm he said he hadn't spoken to the guy who was going to tune it yet and he would call him and call me back. I told him not to worry about it. I told him I wanted my car today and since he had not completed his end of the contract I would not be paying him anything. He started to huff and puff about all the work he had done already and I told him he had contracted with me to complete the job in 3 hours for $150. He obviously could not complete the job, so I would not be paying him and if he had a problem with that I could call the Better Business Bureau of Atlanta and see who they agree with. He backed down and when I went to pick it up all he had done was mount and install the coils, CIM's, and the DIS-4 box but he had not run any wires. I took it over to another performance shop and this guy definitely knows a lot more than the previous guy. He said that he had a little work ahead of my car that day, but he would definitely have it ready by Monday (since he's not open on weekends). I am still going to call The BBBA on the other guy though. By the way anybody in GA, do not go to DNA Racing in Cartersville !

I finally have my car back !!! :D I picked up today and it is working great. I can definitely feel a difference in throttle response, but I don't have any results as of yet for gas milage. I'll know by then end of the week though.
