  • anyone replace their valve seals?

i have a small puff of blue smoke on startup.. wondering if anyone has done it that can give me some tips.. would it just be easier to take the exhaust manifolds off to reach the spark plug holes??

maybe i should just take the heads off and replace my head gaskets.. sigh

Re: anyone replace their valve seals?

I have headers on my car so I cant speak for the exhaust manifolds...Take off your valve covers and unbolt your rocker arms...the bolts are tty so you will need new bolts as well...you also need a special spark plug adapter and a air compressor. Put the adapter in the spark plug hole and compress that cylinder with air. Use a valvespring compressor to compress the springs, have a small magenet ready to take off the valve locks that will be exposed (dont loose them). Once those are off the spring will slide right off. Now you have access to your seals...slide the seal off and put the new seal on. Use a socket that is the same size as the seal and place it ontop of the seal and lightly hammer it into place...reverse everything you just did to put it back together...

Go with the Viton valve guides their good seals haven't heard anything bad from them ever.

Is it really that easy to replace the seals? I haven't learned anything about them but I did change my valve springs.. The seals just slide out?

          cool thanks guys

im thinking of just letting it go for now and doing a valvetrain/gasket overhaul

im pretty sure my headgaskets are bad, which would require me to remove the heads and intake.. if im going to go that far i will replace the lifters, and maybe pushrods if they are cheap

sigh this is starting to blow

It is alot better to do it all at once if you can, on my first build with my cam and stuff I left the valve springs alone and put in light weight pushords(which are not a good idea)bent 8 out of 12 when got to putting in 105lb springs,ZZP modded retainers, stock locks and Comp 5/16" pushrods. Already had Comp OER lifters and V-guides. It was a huge difference in power I noticed right off the bat. I should of done the top end too , but was focused on putting in the Clev.77 bearings, 9.5:1 forged pistons, L32 rods COMP OER lifters and VS cam. This was about 5 years later when I did the top end.

yeah, i figure while i have the intake/heads off i can lift the engine and take the oil pan off and do the gasket really easily

just make sure if you do heads that you have a second party handy to help. i did mine by myself and ended up nicking the head on the dowel putting them in and about two months later !boom! water in the oil...also make sure you clean everything really good before you tear it down, like a good power wash. then also clean all of your sealing surfaces super good, the block really should be milled, but you can get away with a good plastic hard bristle brush.

why not pull it out and do rear main, put a cam in it, supercharger, v8 swap, v-10 swap, put a jet engine in it...maybe buy a whole new car and swap all of the interchangeable parts out...yeah, that would be fun...lol

how many miles do you have?

rear main was just replaced a few months ago

i know this is going to piss off people here, but im not going to put money into a v6 engine (well, for mods anyways)

i would do a v8 swap, but it is too time consuming and expensive.. but i may just let this engine blow up and stick an SBC in there

                    but i have 135k miles

Once the turbo goes on I'll keep my 400wrhp or more V6. LOL I do like V8 sounds though.

how does that work? like do you have to pass based on the emissions regulations of the year model of your vehicle or what?

yes.. only way to be emissions exempt is to have less than 5,000 miles (at least in my state) or have antique/classic/collector car plates/registration
