  • Strange rattle

Lately, I always hear a faint rattling under the car at idle. Its especially noticeable when im right up against a wall (drive thru's). The strange thing is the rattle goes away when I put the car in park. Although, it comes right back when i put it in drive. I'm not very car savy so i'm not sure what it is. I do have headers and a full cat-back. I only tightened the y-pipe bolts once. Could it be the bolt's being loose and rattling around or something? I looked under the car today while I was doing my oil change and I saw nothing in particular that was close and would cause banging/rattling.

Anybody have any clue as to what it could be?

      I agree-

My car is doing the same and my SES says so

Is your SES light on? Checked all your heat shields?

This would happen even though I swapped to a high flow cat just over a year ago?

Also I knew I was throwing SES lights back when I did headers because of an EGR leak. We ended up doing !EGR and removing the code via HPTuners. I remember when I got my car scanned a while back there was an O2 sensor code, but it went away the next day.

I would say its possible for sure, could've been running more rich than normal, who knows. Couldn't tell you how likely though. Having a high flow CAT will eventually set of the O2 anyway, so I wouldn't go by that.

Id say your best bet is to fire her up, and get on the ground and listen.

            Re: Strange rattle

Yeah, thats what it was too. The fact that it was a high flow cat set it off. It sounds like its coming more towards the driver side, but im not 100% sure. Sometimes the noise is not there, sometimes it is. Almost every time I try to listen to it, its not there. It completely goes away in park which is the weird thing. The ONLY time I notice the rattle is when I start it up in the garage OR I am in a drive through.

If it is NOT the cat. What else could possibly be the culprit? Thanks for your help guys!

EDIT: Also my car only has a bit over 50k miles. Way too early to be changing O2 sensors or no?

The Y-pipe maybe... It has a pipe within a pipe!?!

Im going to do what others have said; get some stainless steel self tappers and screw em in there...

Maybe someone who has done this can chime in because Id like to know the exact points to tap...

                        Re: Strange rattle

Also it mainly does it the worst and loudest right when I start the car up. I start the car and it idles fine for 6-7 seconds, then the rattle is really loud for about 5 seconds and then it goes away almost completely. Whenever I try to hear for the rattle, it wont rattle. The main focus is when I do hear the rattle at idle(at a stop) and then drop it into neutral it COMPLETELY goes away. Then put it back in drive and it comes RIGHT back. It doesn't happen every time the car is at a stop but quite often. It doesn't rattle at all when I'm driving, but that's probably due to the exhaust note. None of the support braces were the culprit as there is plenty of space between the support and the piping. This is driving me crazy! What could this rattle be!?

I have a VERY strong feeling that It could be the bolts/clamp that attach the Y pipe to the headers. I didn't have the tools necessary to tighten the y-pipe bolts after the header install(friend helped). Could it be these bolts rattling around or would it not be that loud?

I still haven't tracked down the rattle hence the revival.
