  • what all could i have messed up?

i drove to work today and my car started overheating..and stopped n put water in it but it was too late... the car started smoking...overheated real bad. i have a real strict job...so i was i figured i'd try to get the car atleast to my job so i wouldnt be late...so i keep driving after it overheated real bad and after i put water in it again... and it started making noises in the engine.. a minute later it lost power....engine was still running but when i'd push the gas it wouldnt move. then i pulled over and thats it. i was still late cuz i didnt make it to my job.. car wont start up now.. it tries to turn over..
what all could i had messed up? just the engine i hope. the overheating shouldnt had affected the transmission right?

the engine must have a blowed head gasket and i'm thinking more.. it was making a ticking noise, then a knock noise..

the local junkyard sells motors for 200 with a 30 day warranty so i'm just gonna do that. it is possible to remove the engine from the top i hope. any tips?

i have 5 other cars so theres no hurry. plan on fixing it then selling it. which i was already planning on doing.

might be a good thing...the engine has already idled high (3 mark) and i never found a vacuum leak.

tons of things.. warped heads, cylinder deck warped, blow head/intake gaskets

it is also possible for you to mess your transmission up by overheating the engine, but it is very unlikely IMO

Also, you should never add water when it's already WAY hot. That'll crack a head in no time. Cools down too fast. Best bet, yeah, new motor.

sometimes the car wouldnt start after i drove it awhile..so it was time for a new engine anyway. and im thinking the high idle was something to do with the inside of the engine.

any advice on inspecting a junkyard engine? i know usually if its wrecked, the engine might be good.. if its not wrecked then its probably in a junkyard cuz of the engine. does checking the oil and spark plug matter much when looking at a junkyard?

those problems you listed were most likely sensor problems, and/or starter problems (IAC for high idle) there is no internal engine components that could possibly increase idle speed, it all deals with how much air/fuel is going into the engine

the only real way to check a junkyard engine is to take the plugs out and spin the engine, see if it spins freely, you can look at the plugs to tell what condition the engine was in when it was put there, just checking the oil wont really tell you much.

after you buy the engine is when you can really find out about it by taking the intake off, looking to see if there is any sludge, drop the oil pan for the same reason and to see if there is any metal flakes

if possible you can always start the engine before you buy (if its in the car that is) and see how it sounds when it is running. i would stay away from any ticking engines unless you plan on doing a rebuild

Re: what all could i have messed up?

For idle there is the IAC like CAM98 said and also a screw on the drivers side of the TB that lets how much the TB blade closes unless it is a 99+ then I don't think it has one.. I would start with just checking fuilds to see if anyhing has mixed like a blown gasket and go from there.

engine doesnt try to crank now.. my dad said he added water and it tried to crank then after that...the starter motor just spinned.. like 'riiiiiiiiiinnnn'. should i replace the starter then go from there?

might not be that bad... it just overheated. smoked but the smoke coulda been from the water bursting under the hood cuz my hood area was wet. then it started making noises cuz it was so dry then when i tried pushing the gas pedal it wouldnt give it no power but it was still on...cuz i could a difference when i gave it gas then push the clutch in...

                    still...engine swap wouldnt be hard.

Your tranny could still be damaged if its auto... If M5...

As for engine, from what keeps happening to everyone else, I say spun bearing... And most likely damage to heads...

$200 for a JYard engine complete is a hand out... Southern FL its $250, plus core, and thats a steal! I just go to the Jyard and swap her out...

Before you go swapping the thing out and dealing with that headache, I would suggest getting everything back in order and seeing if it runs and how it runs. Turn it over by hand and see if it spins so you know it's not seized. If it passes that test, install a good starter, add the coolant, and change the oil and look for metal pieces. If that looks good, run it and see how it does. If it is indeed dead, and you have any funds, now would be a good time to build up the replacement engine. Heh, you may decide to sell one of the other cars once you get this baby up and running strong again.

giving it gas with the car not moving means the clutch is slipping, did your rpms go up, or did the car bog down?

Different radiator, 3.4 uses OBD1 and 3.8 uses OBD2, fuel lines, computer wiring...I'd go V8 if you were swapping...
