  • Optional Belt Routing

    If some of you feel the need to delete your AC for whatever reason, the first cost effective idea you may have is to just wrap the serpentine belt around the Alternator. This however effects how much pressure the actual tensioner can put on the belt. Then the belt starts to wear in as they all do and loosen up. Well it's just too loose. The belt from the Alternator to the Power Steering pump starts to flap around like crazy. Mine even ate away at my ECT sensor clip.

    I believe I stole this idea from someone who posted it awhile ago. I can't remember who exactly but thank you for the idea.

    Keep as much or as little of the AC compressor bracket on as possible to just support the Idler pulley. I left my whole bracket on because I think I'll be reinstalling my AC. It just get's too damn hot in that car. Either way, you can replace the Idler pulley with a grooved one from autozone or wherever. Employees at autozone will resist initially saying that it's not a stock piece and they can't look up what you need. You can then kindly ask them to compare your idler pulley, which you've removed and have on hand, with a grooved idler pulley from a different vehicle. They usually don't like that idea, but they'll do it. Hah.

    Anyways, here are the pics.

    And there's just a tiny lip that needs to be ground down to allow clearance for the new routing.

    Easy enough. And the tensioner can now effectively do it's job. No more floppy belt.

        This is EXACTLY what I'm going to do with mine. That looks great and I don't have to try and find some off the wall belt to take up for the lost idler. I like it!

        Do you know the part numbers on the belt and the pulley? Thanks!

          That's something I probably should have taken note of. I'll see if the pulley box is lying around and if the belt still has any numbers on it. Tomorrow.

            That's awesome! It'll be a tremendous help as I'll incorporate it into the build I'm doing. Thanks, man!

                I think I'll save the electric W/P till next year. Had enough fun re-engineering the rest of the motor, but that is one thing I'd like to do. It sure does clean the bay up even more. Thanks Kristen!

                  Re: Optional Belt Routing

                  I hate to revive an old thread, but I wanted to do this alternate belt routing setup today. I could not figure out the belt size and pulley to use. I checked a lot of other threads and it's hard to find something specific.

                  I'm not concerned with the belt size as much as the pulley. Autozone is not being very helpful in finding the right size pulley and I don't want to grab a bad one one that will have play in it. Does anyone know any part numbers or other car model years that would be a starting point of where to look at?

                  I think I can probably figure out the right belt size after a few more attempts.

                  I'm sick of replacing the AC compressor. It's under warranty, but still a pain and I would rather just use the t-tops when I'm taking the Camaro out. More fun any way right?! I don't want to leave the compressor pulley running with bad bearings in case it seizes up.

                  Would appreciate any help!

                    Here are the part numbers I ended up finding. Hopefully this helps someone.

                    Belt: 805K6
                    Pulley: 231051 (AutoZone Part Number)

                      Re: Optional Belt Routing

                      I've just moved and all of my trash got thrown away. Along with that was the box that had the part number of the smooth pulley I used. Sorry oneeightseven.

                      I know what a pain it is to get anyone at autozone to have to use their heads instead of their little computers. What I did was take my ribbed pulley their and tell them I need a smooth pulley just like this. You have to beat it into their heads that it's not going to be a stock part or even a pulley from the same car. I think mine came from some stock SUV part.

                      Again, I'm sorry I didn't write down the number. It is pretty important in that setup.

                        Need to hijack...In Kristen's belt routing pic, I need both of them hoses that goes out from the tensioner assembly. What is that part number(s)?

                        Mines sprung a leak and noticed coolant on the passenger side sway bar bushing.

                          @Blizzard242

                          Not a problem, but thanks for posting the pictures/idea! It helped me work it out in the end. I posted what ended up working for me earlier:

                          Belt: 805K6
                          Pulley: 231051 (AutoZone Part Number)

                          It may not be the perfect pulley. It's real close to rubbing metal, same place as in the pix you posted. It certainly works though! A slightly larger belt would work as well. The tensioner is almost as far back as it will go with the 805.

                          Chopping my cat off tomorrow morning. Spent tonight doing plugs & wires (ugh!) Also helped my buddy get his plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, fuel filter, air filter, and pcv valve (general tuneup) done on his silverado. :rock:

                          @96RS Alex

                          You should be able to go to any Orielly's/NAPA/AutoZone/Advanced and they will tell you. There are only 3 types of hoses; lower, upper and heater in our setup. Or are hers custom or something? Maybe I misunderstood.
