  • Mixed series of questions, if anyone has time.

    Hi all,

I have some questions, some about mods, one or two troubleshooting. Would appriciate any answers anyone can give. My car is a 1998 firebird.

    1. I've got a good deal on a set of 4.10 gears and a Posi from Gen 3 Camaro. Would these fit in a 1998?

    2. On starting, usually with the remote starter, my car will occasionally chug like it's going to start and then doesn't. Never happens with a manual start. Any ideas?

    3. When I'm driving, when I give it some gas(Not WOT), sometimes I'll push the pedal down and the engine tone will increase slightly for ~1 sec, but no acceleration. Then it roars, and acceleration kicks in. Almost like a hesitation. Any thoughts what might cause that?

    4. The rubber fuel lines that pass the coil packs, is it possible to replace those with metal hosing?

    5. Replacing the Radiator hosing with metal lines, would that cause in increase in engine temps?

    6. Would a Thermostat housing for the LS1's fit a 3800?

    7. Any under-drive pulleys or dress up kits available for the 3800? I can't seem to find any.

    8. When I go to do the gears, is there anything else in there I should replace? 105k miles on the rear end.

    9. I've a throttle-body spacer that I'm going to install shortly, it comes with cable extenders, and for the life of me I can't figure out where these go. Anyone able to give me a quick pointer?

    10. Alluminum oil pan, does it provide any tangible cooling benefit?

    Thanks to all!

    Edit:

    11. Any weight-loss tips? Obviously the A/C, and rear seats. Rear speakers in a monsoon worth keeping or cut them for weight?

    12. Sub-frame connecters, Triangluar or straight? Is one better than the other?

    answer to number one-

    http://forum.camarov6.com/showthread.php?t=95860
read big brians post, 7th one down.

2-if it never happens with the key in ignition start, then...must be the remote starter! YAY!

3-is this during extended driving periods?

    4-not sure

5-shoudnt, drag cars do it all the time.

    6-no

7-yes, also electric water pumps too.

8-never done gears...couldnt tell you, but if you are putting in a new diff, then have it checked out before you put it in. if you have an open rear and are going to LSD then you are changing the carrier go ahead and do wheel/axle bearings

9-i have a dbw car so sorry, cant help there.

10-in fact aluminum is an excellent conductor of heat...the only reason for changing to aluminum is to save weight.

    11-spare tire and jack.

12-what do you even mean?? triangular or round maybe??

I wish I knew, I'd buy them in a second if I could find them anywhere.

      5. Replacing the Radiator hosing with metal lines, would that cause in increase in engine temps?
If anything I'd think it would reduce engine temps by dissipating the heat better. The stock hoses seem to stay pretty cool.

      8. When I go to do the gears, is there anything else in there I should replace? 105k miles on the rear end.
You can probably get away with reusing the bearings if they're in good shape, I replaced mine. You need to replace the pinion seal, axle seals, and crush collar at the very least. Obviously buy the right thickness shims too, if you don't already have them handy.
94 Camaro convertible -- mostly stock
97 Firebird -- Project Car - kyb agx shocks, eibach springs, 3.42 torsen diff, aluminum driveshaft, slp cai, pacesetter headers, magnaflow cat-back. hptuners. not done yet.

Well, I was thinking maybe it's just that I keep the key turned until I get started, missing something. I did consider it was just the remote, but thought I'd ask to double check.

3-is this during extended driving periods?
No, it's pretty much all the time. It's been doing it for a long time. I've changed the fuel filter, and the O2 sensors, and still get it. Winter, Summer, it's consistent. It just raises the tone slightly, nothing changes, then roars to life after about a second delay. I was actually wondering if it could be a fuel pump issue of some sort?

7-yes, also electric water pumps too.
Yes, I saw those. My research here lead me to believe they have relatively short lifespans, and give no warning when they're about to go?

Do you have any suggestions where I could look? I've tried Summit and a few other places, but haven't been able to turn up anything in the way of pulleys.

12-what do you even mean?? triangular or round maybe??
Yes, I guess that's probably a better way to put it. There's a couple kits listed I've found so far, but not sure if one is better than the other. Probably should mention I have T-tops too.

        Thanks again!
